Owosso Middle School Student Council held their Powder Puff Football Game last night and it was a great time for a great cause! Thank you to everyone who worked together to help raise $1,254 for the Memorial Healthcare Breast Cancer Center care packages project.

Student Council Advisor and OMS Teacher Mr. Bird shared, “I am incredibly proud of the fun, memorable fundraising event that OMS Student Council set up. I am thankful for the outpouring of support shown by OMS students, staff, and families. Owosso Sports Boosters also stepped up in an amazing way by graciously allocating concession proceeds to the cause. Thank you to everyone for your enthusiastic, empathetic involvement. You rock!”

Owosso Middle School students begin their days in Trojan Time, exploring and learning about topics of their choice. This year, teachers wanted to share their interests with students so some of the topics include: outdoor education, a variety of sports, art, music, creative writing, and more. It is also a time for students to participate in SAT preparation, peer-to-peer program, social-emotional learning, and anti-bullying lessons. They switch to a new topic each quarter.

In Mr. Matt Friend’s Outdoor Education Trojan Time, he’s been introducing students to the outdoors through topics like hunting, fishing, and cooking and eating wild game. Students have been engaged in making venison jerky, harvesting and cooking eggs for breakfast, setting up a tree stand, and eating fresh Alaska salmon.

These activities are inspiring students to learn and try new things that they can enjoy for a lifetime. Owosso Public Schools is the District of Opportunities!

I have a question. What is the age limit at the dance? I heard it was 25?!
As a parent and former worker of OPS, please ask the parents for their opinion prior to closing schools. Please send put a survey! I will make sure I share and give my input. For those not feeling safe, offer virtual. Many parents trust and know that their kids are safe at school. Looking at the numbers also, cases are high...but death has lowered. If people are that worried, let them stay home or vaccinate. My kids being in-person, is best for them both physically and mentally. If not, then they have to come to my work place to try and do virtual learning. Please do not fail my kid down due to the this learning situation. Thanks.
Hi! If you have a PreK or Kindergarten daughter, family member or friend who would like to meet other girls her age in the area in a socially distance, safe, way, comment on this post or send me a message with your email and I will send you information about our upcoming free Make New Friends event in your area! 😄
Is Owosso going to have soccer this year? Maybe I missed it already.
HI Owosso families and friends! In celebration of Women's History Month, invite the kids in your life to learn about women who were heroes in their own way, and show them that they can be a hero too! This FREE, interactive, virtual event will take place in 4 sessions, with a bonus 5th session to anyone who signs up. All the supplies for the event will be sent via email prior to the event and only requires paper and a printer to join in on the fun. While the activities are for grades K-5, we recommend that anyone who is Kindergarten or 1st grade has an adult present to help. Sessions include: Dr. Mona (with a live Q&A), Ruby Bridges Hall, Rachel Carson and Sally Ride. Not sure who these women are? Join us to find out! The first session is less than a week away on Wednesday, March 17th from 4:30-5:30pm and includes a bonus Q&A with the hero herself, so sign up today! https://drmona.eventbrite.com https://rubybridgeshall.eventbrite.com https://rachelcarson.eventbrite.com https://sallyride.eventbrite.com Powered by Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Girl Scout membership not required to attend.

Good morning! I'm the primary caretaker for a 10 yr old boy on the autism spectrum, and he LOVES to swim; swimming is exceptionally therapeutic and beneficial to him. We just moved up to the area recently, and he is enrolled at SRESD west. I was told to check with the high school about the possibility of him being able to use the pool, even during the current situation, if he's able to provide a doctor's note/recommendation. I appreciate any help!
For all of you parents and teachers out there... A letter sent out to parents and teachers, by a school superintendent in Voorheesvile, New York State. This applies for all children, everywhere. "Dear Friends and Colleagues, I am writing today about the children of this pandemic. After a lifetime of working among the young, I feel compelled to address the concerns that are being expressed by so many of my peers about the deficits the children will demonstrate when they finally return to school. My goodness, what a disconcerting thing to be concerned about in the face of a pandemic which is affecting millions of people around the country and the world. It speaks to one of my biggest fears for the children when they return. In our determination to “catch them up,” I fear that we will lose who they are and what they have learned during this unprecedented era. What on earth are we trying to catch them up on? The models no longer apply, the benchmarks are no longer valid, the trend analyses have been interrupted. We must not forget that those arbitrary measures were established by people, not ordained by God. We can make those invalid measures as obsolete as a crank up telephone! They simply do not apply. When the children return to school, they will have returned with a new history that we will need to help them identify and make sense of. When the children return to school, we will need to listen to them. Let their stories be told. They have endured a year that has no parallel in modern times. There is no assessment that applies to who they are or what they have learned. Remember, their brains did not go into hibernation during this year. Their brains may not have been focused on traditional school material, but they did not stop either. Their brains may have been focused on where their next meal is coming from, or how to care for a younger sibling, or how to deal with missing grandma, or how it feels to have to surrender a beloved pet, or how to deal with death. Our job is to welcome them back and help them write that history. I sincerely plead with my colleagues, to surrender the artificial constructs that measure achievement and greet the children where they are, not where we think they “should be.” Greet them with art supplies and writing materials, and music and dance and so many other avenues to help them express what has happened to them in their lives during this horrific year. Greet them with stories and books that will help them make sense of an upside-down world. They missed you. They did not miss the test prep. They did not miss the worksheets. They did not miss the reading groups. They did not miss the homework. They missed you. Resist the pressure from whatever ‘powers that be’ who are in a hurry to “fix” kids and make up for the “lost” time. The time was not lost, it was invested in surviving an historic period of time in their lives—in our lives. The children do not need to be fixed. They are not broken. They need to be heard. They need be given as many tools as we can provide to nurture resilience and help them adjust to a post pandemic world. Being a teacher is an essential connection between what is and what can be. Please, let what can be demonstrate that our children have so much to share about the world they live in and in helping them make sense of what, for all of us has been unimaginable. This will help them– and us– achieve a lot more than can be measured by any assessment tool ever devised. Peace to all who work with the children!"
