The World Class Teaching Program at the University of Mississippi is assisting school systems and teachers to understand National Board Certification, which is dedicated to defining, identifying, and recognizing accomplished teaching in the U.S.A. National Board Certification is a demonstration of teaching practice as measured against high and rigorous standards. Offered on a voluntary basis, the

advanced system of National Board Certification complements but does not replace, state licensing. The Mississippi legislature has approved an annual salary supplement of $6,000 to $10,000 for teachers who achieve national certification. The University of Mississippi World Class Teaching Program provides Overview Sessions at school districts to help teachers understand the entire National Board Certification process as well as Standards Study Workshops for teachers who are seriously considering engaging in the process. Mentoring sessions for teachers who are involved in the National Board Process are offered twice a month in Oxford, Southaven, Tupelo, and Madison County and online mentoring utilizing Zoom and our one-of-a-kind, Blackboard candidate support course, WCTP 601.

A scholarship endowment that benefits eight Ole Miss students majoring in STEM fields will expand to support 16 thanks to an additional $3 million gift from founders Bill and Melanie Roper.

“As we prepare our students to be the next generation of leaders, we are deeply grateful for the exceptionally generous scholarship resources and scholar engagement from Melanie and Bill Roper,” said UM Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce. “They have a clear vision: developing citizen-scholars who will make significant contributions to the world. It’s inspiring for our students to see how much donors like the Ropers care about their success.”

Meet Heidi, a graduate student pursuing her Master’s in Elementary Education with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Mississippi.

Heidi is passionate about creating a classroom where students feel valued, curious, and excited to learn each day. Inspired by her mother’s creativity and care for children, she strives to bring the same sense of compassion and purpose into her own teaching.

Returning for graduate school has allowed Heidi to continue learning from the professors who have guided and encouraged her throughout her journey. Through her Graduate Assistantship, she has enjoyed mentoring undergraduate students and supporting them as they prepare for their own classrooms.

Outside of class, Heidi works in a local church nursery, where she enjoys connecting with children and families in the Oxford community. One of her favorite memories in Guyton Hall is when Dean Rock made pancakes in the lobby, a moment that reflects the warmth and community she loves about the School of Education.

We are proud to recognize Heidi for her dedication to her studies, her passion for serving others, and her commitment to becoming an impactful future educator.
