🚴‍♀️🍨🎨 Enjoy an easy-paced bike ride on the JCC managed Iowa River Trail!

This ride will meander along the Iowa River Trail from Iowa City to North Liberty and back. Along the way, we will visit the home studio of local artist Deanne Wortman surrounded by woods and full of inspiration and whimsy. We will also stop in North Liberty at locally-run Heyn's Ice Cream for a sweet treat before heading back to Iowa City.

This will be a ~14 mile bike ride. Participants must provide their own bike and are asked to wear a helmet during the ride. The cost of any ice cream or art work is not included with this registration. Participants are encouraged to bring cash to cover their own expenses.

and I wake in the night at the least sound

🛶 We have another chance to get out and enjoy the water coming up! This relaxed, beginner kayak program on Kent Park will give participants the chance to soak up the sun and savor the last days of summer.

Ready to get WILD?! The Wings & Wild Things Festival is back for a third year on Sunday, October 4th. Celebrate Iowa's natural world and enjoy hands-on learning and recreation activities in Johnson County's beautiful Kent Park 🦋. This year's event will also feature live music from the Burlington Street Bluegrass Band, good eats from local food vendors, lawn games, crafts, and more.

We need your help! Volunteers are a big part of our prairie restoration efforts each year, and we have numerous Prairie Seed Harvest events planned that could us lots of folks! During these events, volunteers are trained how to ID and harvest our target species before fanning out into the harvest area to collect seeds. All harvested seeds will be used for our next big prairie planting project this fall (volunteers are also welcome to take a some seed home after each event for their own native gardens!).

There are lots of options for dates, times, locations, and hiking distances (or no hiking!).

On Wednesday morning, volunteers with Johnson County Conservation conducted a Monarch butterfly survey as part of the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) at Cedar River Crossing. IMMP is a nationwide effort to track and support monarch butterfly populations by gathering essential data on their habitats, breeding success, and overall health.

Volunteers scoured the sample plot, 10,000 square meters in size, looking for monarch eggs, caterpillars, and adults. They also collected data on the number of milkweed plants (host plants for monarch butterflies) found in the plot. Caterpillars go through five growth stages - called instars - before building a chrysalis, pupating, and emerging as adults. Monitors tracked which stages of instars were observed. Here’s what they found:
- 174 milkweed plants (173 Common Milkweed, 1 Swamp Milkweed)
- 42 total monarchs spotted in the following life stages:
o 24 eggs
o 4 first instars
o 1 second instar
o 2 fifth instars
o 11 adults

*Half of our available canoes are now filled! If you are wanting to sign up for this awesome volunteer event, please do soon so that we can look into lining up more canoes if needed!*

Sign up for our 10th Iowa River Clean Up! This year's event will be on Saturday, Sept 19th.

During this event, you can be a river hero by volunteering to canoe the Iowa River digging out trash large and small from the sand bars for proper recycling and disposal. Folks uninterested in canoeing, or with less time available, can volunteer to meet canoes at the landing at Hills Campground in the afternoon to help unload trash from canoes and clean all of the gear.

This event is always a great time, and one of the most satisfying ways to take action and make our world a little better.
