During the August 3, 2026, meeting of the Granville County Board of Commissioners, the Human Relations Commission presented the Reverend Robert O. Blackwell Award to Eddie McCoy. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the community by fostering understanding among diverse groups, promoting unity, and improving the quality of life for the citizens of Granville County.
Born in 1942, McCoy is an Oxford resident and a self-taught local historian, businessman, and community advocate. His involvement in the civil rights movement inspired a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of justice, fairness, and the preservation of Granville County's African American history.
Over several decades, Mr. McCoy has compiled an extensive collection of research documenting African American churches, schools, and communities throughout Granville County. His work includes preserving historical records, church histories, land deeds, school documents, oral histories, and other archival materials that chronicle the lives, achievements, and contributions of African American citizens. His research has also helped preserve the history of the county's civil rights movement and other significant events that shaped the community, ensuring these stories remain accessible for future generations.
