Oxford, Maryland, is a small town with lots of narrow streets, so the fire company needed a vehicle with a very short wheelbase.

Earlier this morning I was given the opportunity to accompany Maryland Forest Service employees while they conducted a prescribed burn at Talbot Conservation Park on the outskirts of our town. Conditions were ideal, with low humidity and light winds out of the N/NE.

The thick grasses were very dry and burned very easily and quickly across the site. Unfortunately the phragmites was a little more problematic and it's location deep in the marshes prevented it catching despite plenty of encouragement by the men with the drip torches!

Most everything had self-extinguished no more than an hour and a half to two hours from ignition time. A few hot spots may remain for a little longer, but nothing that will cause problems.

All in all, a successful burn, and most interesting for a "structural" firefighter to watch.

🚨 Prescribed Burn – March 24

The Maryland Forest Service will conduct a prescribed burn at Oxford Conservation Park on Tuesday, March 24 (weather permitting) on behalf of Talbot County.

Residents may see smoke in the area, and drivers along Route 333 should use caution. Burn hazard signs will be posted prior to ignition.
