Lafayette County believes in the importance of local support that helps residents maintain stability and independence.

For local veterans, that includes guidance through the federal benefits system. Disability claims, survivor benefits, education assistance, and pensions can be difficult to navigate alone. The county’s Veterans Affairs office works with veterans and their families to access the benefits they have earned through service.

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southwestern Lafayette County until 7:45 PM.

⛈️ At 6:56 PM, a severe storm was located near Curtis Station, moving east at 40 mph.

⚠️ Expect damage to roofs, siding, trees, and vehicles

📍 Areas in the path include Taylor and surrounding southwestern Lafayette County communities.

Move indoors now. Get to an interior room away from windows. If you’re on the road along MS-328 or US-278, slow down — visibility can drop fast.

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning including southwestern Lafayette County, along with Panola, northwestern Yalobusha, and east central Quitman counties.

⏰ In effect until 7:45 PM
💨 60 mph wind gusts
🧊 Quarter size hail (1.00”)
📍 At 6:56 PM, the storm was near Curtis Station — about 8 miles west of Batesville — moving east at 40 mph

Areas in the path include: Taylor, the Sardis/Pope/Courtland corridor, Batesville, Water Valley, and MS-315 and MS-7 south of Oxford.

⚠️ IMPACTS: Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Downed limbs may cause isolated power outages.

✅ WHAT TO DO NOW:
• Move to an interior room on the lowest floor
• Stay away from windows
• Bring in pets and secure loose outdoor items
• If driving on I-55 (mile markers 229–252) or MS-7, slow down and be ready for sudden heavy rain and hail
• Do not drive through flooded roadways — Turn Around, Don’t Drown

⛈️ Primary threats include:

The warned area includes Oxford, Abbeville, Taylor, Tula, Denmark and surrounding portions of Lafayette County.

Be prepared for possible downed trees, power lines and localized power outages.

Lafayette County firefighters train for the calls they see often and the ones they hope they never have to face.

Serving 650 square miles, crews have to be ready for whatever the call brings. Regular training helps make sure they are.
