Step into Ventura County history with familiar faces from Heritage Square ✨

Join us as Connie Korenstein, Heritage Square’s Education Coordinator, along with fellow docent Ernie Morrison, take the stage for a special guest speaker session presented by the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board.

Their presentation, “A Father and Son Legacy,” brings to life the remarkable story behind the development of the Port of Hueneme—beginning with Thomas Bard’s 1871 vision of a shipping wharf and continuing through Richard Bard’s determined efforts to build the port into the vital community resource it is today.

With Connie’s signature storytelling (yes—she may just “step out” of history herself!) and Ernie portraying multiple characters along the way, this is history told in a way that’s engaging, theatrical, and memorable.

Volunteer Highlight | Behind-the-Scenes Exchange
This week we had the pleasure of welcoming three docents and the homeowner from the Faulkner House in Santa Paula for a private, behind-the-scenes tour at Heritage Square.
The visit began with a short primer on Heritage Square—how the site came together, its interpretive goals, and how programming has evolved over time. From there, we spent over an hour on an in-depth exterior tour of the Petit House, focusing on architectural details, restoration context, and docent-level storytelling approaches.
One especially meaningful connection explored during the tour was that the Faulkner House in Santa Paula and the Petit House share the same architects, making the discussion particularly rich in terms of design intent, stylistic choices, and regional architectural patterns.
The entire experience was audio-recorded and video-recorded, resulting in 40 short video clips that will be valuable for future interpretation, training, and content development.
We’re also grateful to the Faulkner house owners, who generously offered our docents a reciprocal tour of the Faulkner House in Santa Paula—an opportunity we look forward to coordinating.
Thank you to the Friends of Heritage Square involved for strengthening connections between historic sites and for continuing to build shared knowledge across our docent community. These exchanges help keep interpretation thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in place.

Connie Korenstein, Heritage Square’s Education Coordinator, will be providing a lecture Feb 23rd.

📣 NEW SPEAKER SERIES ALERT!

Please join the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board for the next part in their guest speaker series, Ventura County Chronicles: Fire, Freight & Freeways.

Retired educator and historic interpreter Connie Korenstein will bring to life the fascinating story of the Port of Hueneme, from Thomas Bard’s 1871 vision of an agricultural shipping wharf through the ups and downs of his son Richard's struggle to build out the grand port his father envisioned.

Today at Heritage Square 💛
Our docent spent 3.5 hours straight welcoming 23 visitors on guided tours — nonstop conversations, stories, and questions.

Guests joined us from Camarillo, Ventura, Oxnard, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Whittier, Altadena, Santa Barbara, and City Terrace, all curious about the history and architecture of the Square.

The Gingerbread House Exhibit turned out to be the biggest draw today — pulling people in, sparking nostalgia, and leading many to stay for a tour.

Small groups. Big interest. Real connections.
That’s a good day at the Square.
