North Beach School District director Cathey Peterson recently resigned her elected position representing district 5 on the school board. The board is now requesting that any and all individuals who are interested in serving in this position until the next regular school board election in fall 2023 submit a biographical sketch and statement of interest to board chair Steve Rockey by next Monday, August 15th. The board will then run an appointment process to select its new member. To be eligible for appointment, individuals must be registered to vote in and reside within the boundaries of district 5, a map of which is included in the comments on this post (and the boundaries of which are described in the school district's announcement of this board vacancy, also linked in the comments). District 5 occupies the southern end of the peninsula on which Ocean Shores sits.

As you may have noticed, the North Beach School District is experiencing a crisis. Students, parents, educators, and community members have all recently voiced concerns about serious issues of leadership, accountability, and personal safety.

This group (North Beach Citizens for Schools) is a private political committee, not affiliated with the school district, which was formed solely to support the district's levy and bond measures whenever they come up for a vote. That's an important function, but its scope is limited and occasional.

What our community and its schools really need, now and forever, is an active Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) with participants from those three groups plus other community members who care about public education.

A PTSA can be a valuable source of support and volunteerism to help students and their educators. It can also be a source of outspoken advocacy to influence and hold accountable the Board of Directors and the District's administration on matters of policy. To be effective, a PTSA must operate independently of the school board and district administration.

If you would like to attend a future organizing meeting to found a North Beach PTSA, please send an email to [email protected], and you will be contacted soon with scheduling information.

During the recent levy and bond campaign, we heard from voters who wanted the North Beach School District to engage the public even more in the formulation of bond measure proposals to meet the critical long-term facilities needs of the district, before bringing those proposals to the ballot.

That public engagement is getting underway this week, as Superintendent Andy Kelly hosts a trio of listening sessions at each of the district's three schools. He'll share some information about options and costs, but most importantly, he wants to hear from you, the citizens of the North Beach, about what's most important to you. Please join us at these events:

Monday, March 7th at Pacific Beach Elementary @ 6pm
Tuesday, March 8th at North Beach MS/HS @ 6pm
Thursday, March 17th at Ocean Shores Elementary @ 6pm

Today, we have better news! In an updated vote tally released at 4:00 PM, the Grays Harbor County Auditor reports that Prop 2 (the 2-year renewal of our district's Educational Programs & Operations Levy) leads by 54 votes, with only 45 ballots (estimated) still to be counted county-wide.

So while we will wait for every last vote to be counted before calling this an official win for the levy, things are looking good. Thank you, voters of the North Beach!

Well, that was not the outcome we had hoped for. Prop 1 (the bond) failed to pass, and Prop 2 (the levy) is trailing slightly, with more ballots still to be counted.

We know this, though: the needs of our students and educators in the North Beach School District tonight are the very same needs they had when they woke up on Election Day. Our thoughts are with all of you and your families as you grapple with an uncertain future. You are not alone!

We want to thank everyone who has joined the cause in the course of this campaign. Whether you waved a sign, chatted with a neighbor, raised or donated funds, served on our steering committee, hosted a meetup, or posted about your support online to encourage others, we see you and we're grateful to have your support on this journey. It's not over!

And finally, we thank all the voters of the North Beach School District. Whether you voted Yes twice, No twice, or split the ticket, your participation is vital to this community and to our democracy. You will be called upon to make hard choices again!

Today's the day, North Beach! For you last-minute voters, please get those Yes votes on Prop 1 & 2 recorded on your ballots, signed, and postmarked today. No postage is required for mail-in, and ballots can also be deposited in the drop box at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. Every vote counts! And when you've completed that task, sit back and take in some of the latest statewide coverage of our little coastal election, from KIRO-TV last night.

Voters on the Washington coast are deciding whether to build tsunami safety zones at two schools and move a third school to higher ground.

"On Tuesday, voters in Ocean Shores and neighboring communities will decide whether to approve a bond measure that would, in part, build new vertical additions at two schools, offering students and nearby residents a place to flee from a surging ocean."

Mike Baker, the Northwest bureau chief of the New York Times, weighs in today with in-depth coverage of the choice our district's voters face in tomorrow's election.

A major quake in the Pacific Northwest, expected sooner or later, will most likely create waves big enough to wipe out entire towns. Evacuation towers may be the only hope, if they ever get built.
