No on Pacific Grove Measure P

No on Pacific Grove Measure P Vote NO on Measure P: The tax on non-profits and charitable events in Pacific Grove PACIFIC GROVE IS A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY.

BUT MEASURE P WILL NOT MAKE OUR CITY BETTER. Measure P is a tax on events and admissions in Pacific Grove, with the major burden falling on non-profit organizations. Measure P also taxes memberships in non-profits like our Museum of Natural History and the Aquarium. The City Council placed Measure P on the ballot in a controversial 4-3 vote. Measure P is opposed by a broad coalition of community l

eaders, local non-profits, small businesses, and residents who care about Pacific Grove and work for its betterment. They know that there are better solutions.

Dear Friends,

With the votes tallied and the results known, we want to say thank you for all of your hard work and support helping to defeat Measure P.

As of this afternoon, Measure P has been defeated by over 76% percent of the vote.

When our diverse coalition of non-profit organizations, local businesses, and community leaders came together several months ago, we promised to run a positive, fact-based campaign that focused on the many flaws of Measure P. We could not have lived up to this promise and achieved our goal of defeating Measure P without your help and support.

We are very proud of the campaign that we ran, and we are tremendously thankful Pacific Grove voters agreed with us that Measure P would do more harm than good. Now that the campaign is over, our coalition remains committed to working proactively with the City of Pacific Grove to help find collaborative solutions to the challenges impacting our community.

In the days ahead we plan to recycle all of the No on Measure P yard signs. Our campaign team will be removing signs as we see them and you are also welcome to return your sign to our campaign office located at 171 17th Street on the 2nd floor in Pacific Grove. Thank you for your willingness to display a sign in your yard during the campaign. The visibility created by these signs helped demonstrate the broad community opposition to Measure P.

Thank you again for your help and support. We could not have been successful in defeating Measure P without you.

Sincerely,

Barbara Meister and Roberto Flores

By now, you probably know that Measure P is a tax on events in Pacific Grove. You might also know that because of the way the measure is written, it ultimately falls for the most part on non-profits and charities when they hold fundraising events or provide classes with an admission charge.

Looks like the cats agree too, VOTE NO ON P!

Check out this great article by the Monterey Herald reaffirming the flaws and lack of clarity with Measure P.

“We’re potentially the second largest nonprofit to be affected by it and we’re still not clear about what it entails,” -Dough Thurston, Big Sur International Marathon

Friends of Pacific Grove Library are concerned that working to meet the tax will “..either cost us more money or divert our attention from raising money for the library,”

Monterey Bay Aquarium "as a tax generator" for pacific grove
"It generates about $24 million a year in Transient Occupancy Tax, a tax justified because it pays for local government services used by the patrons. TOT, mostly because of aquarium visitors, is Pacific Grove’s third largest source of revenue."

"...moral issue involved in taxing a charity that has as its purpose protecting the oceans as a food source for the world, particularly those fighting starvation."

In the words of Pacific Grove residents, "Measure P is not the answer" in a letter to the editor in the Cedar Street Times.

"Measure P is ill-conceived, fundamentally unfair and, if passed, would create a dangerous precedent."

"The city needs structural solutions to its long-term funding problems, not a supposed quick fix"

"The city will get far more benefit by working constructively with
the aquarium and other non-profits than by taxing them."
