Yes, it is hot again. Extreme Heat Warning thru at least 8PM Saturday. If you need a place to cool off, the Scenic Regional Library Pacific Branch is open daily. Remember, consecutive elevated heat days can take a toll.

An Extreme Heat Warning is now in effect for the entire region through Saturday. Afternoon heat index values will top out around 105 degrees. Please take precautions!

*UPDATE* At this time, we are informed that all Pacific UP gates are in normal operation. Thank you for your patience and support.

We are aware that the Union Pacific gates at both Payne and 4th Streets are stuck in the down position. UP crews have been dispatched, but we do not have an ETA for them or a resolution time estimate at the moment. Updates will be provided as obtained.

We urge all travelers to use Lamar Parkway or 1st Street or Olive crossings, and do NOT attempt to go around the gates. The tracks remain active - avoid potential accidents.

Our dangerous heat spell is now extended at least until 8PM Saturday.
Also air quality is forecast to decline into the Orange category. Plan ahead is you must go outside, especially if you are susceptible to these poor conditions.

Air quality in the St. Louis metropolitan area is forecast to be unhealthy for elderly individuals, children, and those with heart/lung conditions.

PSA: If you use life-sustaining, electrically operated medical equipment, Ameren Missouri's Medical Equipment Registry allows customers to register to receive advance notice of planned maintenance outages.

KEY DETAILS:
• Purpose: Provides advance warning for planned outages so you can prepare backup power or alternative arrangements.
• Important Limitations: It does not guarantee uninterrupted service, prevent service disconnection for nonpayment, or provide priority service restoration after an unexpected outage. Ameren strongly recommends having a backup power source or alternative plan.
• Eligible Equipment: Includes oxygen concentrators, dialysis machines, ventilators, BiPAP machines, and heart monitors.

HOW TO APPLY:
1. Get the Form: Download the fillable PDF from the Ameren Medical Equipment Registry Application or call Ameren at 1-800-552-7583 to request a copy by mail.
2. Complete Sections: Fill out the customer information section, and have a licensed medical professional completely fill out and sign the provider's statement.
3. Submit: Email the completed form to [email protected] or fax it to 314-259-3116.

We're not done with Summer yet! NWS STL has issued a Heat Advisory for Pacific through Friday at 8PM.Temps will approach 100 degrees this week with successive days of dangerous heat indices.
To our east, there is an Extreme Heat Watch for STL County and the City of St. Louis for the same period.

If you must be outside, ensure you dress for success, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water and monitor for heat illness symptoms.

The Scenic Regional Library Pacific Branch is available Monday though Saturday as a Cooling Center.

AUGUST IS NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AWARENESS MONTH [POST #6]

Emergency Management operates in a structured, cyclic phased manner. This provides an organized approach to providing valuable deliverables, training, skills and readiness of the EM team and the "Whole Community". Besides the four phases outlined below, often there is an additional, upfront phase of prevention - the ultimate preference over mitigation to avoid a risk.

It might be the relationship between emergency management and public safety. It could be the local hospital, school, business, nonprofit, or volunteer organization that works alongside emergency managers to prepare for what could happen and support the community when it's needed.

Sometimes those partnerships are visible. Sometimes they're happening behind the scenes. Either way, having people who know each other, understand their roles, and are ready to work together can make a real difference.

Schools Are Back in Session – Time for a Review Lesson

As our children resume their educational programs, we are reminded that their safety is a priority for us all. The following tips can bring safety, security and protection for them, drivers, and parents.
• Heed the flashing red bus lights and STOP sign
• Don’t block crosswalks and follow crossing guards’ instructions
• Pedestrians have the right-of-way
• Speed limits are often reduced in school zones
• Beware of bicyclists who should be following the traffic flow and rules of the road, but might not be
• Help your students know:
o Stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus
o If something falls by or under the bus, do not retrieve it without informing the driver
o Walk in front of the bus, not behind it, at least 10 feet from the hood, and make eye contact with the driver
o Keep the bus aisles and foot areas clear
o Do not talk or text while walking, and avoid wearing your headphones
o Look in both directions when crossing a street
o Use designated crosswalks
• Be patient when dropping off or picking up your students

AUGUST IS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (EM) AWARENESS MONTH - THE WHOLE COMMUNITY IN ACTION [POST #4]

The expression “no man is an island” certainly applies to the Emergency Management (EM) world. Success for EM depends on partnerships, teamwork, mutual aid, and standards. It is achieved via planning, training, exercising, problem solving, collaborative decision making and communications. It is accomplished by embracing a concept dubbed “whole community” which is a practical approach where government agencies, local leaders, private businesses, non-profits and individual residents work together. This includes individuals, families, the private sector, faith-based organizations, schools, media outlets, all levels of government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) - like the American Red Cross. We are stronger together!

Pacific EMA has forged many relationships and continues to expand those partnerships. We are members of County, Regional and State programs, and partner with our very own police, fire and EMS agencies. We are funded by both City budget and by a FEMA/SEMA Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) in a 50/50% split fashion at 28 hours weekly.

When there is no live emergency – so-called “blue sky days” – the EMD gets to plan and prepare for unplanned incidents and special events, fulfill grant and professional development requirements, review our existing policies and procedures for improvements and necessary updates, present public training, build our local Volunteer Response Team (VRT), support the Police Department, expand more partnerships, and work on ways to avoid or mitigate existing and potential risks.

Updates will be provided as available. Westbound I-44 vehicles wanting to exit for Pacific should use Exit 257 (Viaduct) and not the Six Flags exit.
