The Village of the Coastside has launched a series of FREE monthly community presentations they are calling the HEALTHY LONGEVITY SPEAKER SERIES. These presentations will alternate between Pacifica and the Half Moon Bay Area. The first one was last month at the Pacifica Coastside History Museum/Little Brown Church on the topic of the Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence.

Their next presentation is coming up on Wednesday, October 14th, 1:00pm to 3:00pm at Half Moon Bay's Ted Adcock Community Center. Their featured speaker will be Ann Blick Hamer, LCSW who will explore the topic of "Meaningful Connections: Finding Friends, Fun and Purpose in Retirement." Light refreshments will be served.

Older adults have long lived in fear of dementia. Given its prevalence and severity, that’s understandable. But recent research shows that we are making progress in addressing these diseases, too. An Economist piece from the summer headlined “How Dementia Is Being Defeated” (https://lnkd.in/eW...

National Good Neighbor Day is Monday, September 28th. Lots of good ideas here about creating meaningful connections in the community that we live in, wherever that happens to be.

We just shared information about National Good Neighbor Day on September 28, and we're pleased to be an Equipping Partner this year.

For solo agers, neighbors can be an important part of a broader Architecture of Support - not as assumed caregivers, but as people who may notice, check in, share information, or simply strengthen connection where we live. That distinction matters.

Building reliable support doesn’t always begin with a major plan. Sometimes it begins with knowing the people around you, and taking one step toward connection.

We hope you’ll take a look at the resources Navigating Solo™ is sharing for Good Neighbor Day and consider how stronger neighborhood connections can support all of us as we age. https://navigatingsolo.com/goodneighborday

The 26th Annual Kahuna Kupuna took place yesterday Saturday, June 27th at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. This event is one of the few, if not only, amateur surf contests anywhere that is specifically designed for older surfers. Age brackets include the 40-49 “Junior” division, the 50-59 age division, 60-69 age division, 70-74 age division, 75-79 age division. If we had surfers who had entered the contest in their 80s, a division would have been created for them too. Contest organizers do everything they can to make this contest as “age friendly” as possible.

All funds raised support the non-profit Pacifica’s Environmental Family which organizes environmental education and offers fiscal sponsorship to grassroots environmental community groups.

The “Kupuna” has become a community wide event that brings the local surfing community together and is supported by the City of Pacifica and a wide cross section of community businesses and organizations.

Many thanks to Steve Franks, the photographer who took these pictures.
