April 21 is Earthday in Pacifica! Starting at 9 a.m. we will be set up at Bier Grove (across from the red house) and will have a sign in table, snacks, and some supplies.

There will be a number of projects to do. The top priority in Vallemar will be removing the Cape Ivy around the creek. The vine grows quickly and travels over shrubs, winds around branches, and finally overtakes the plants all around the creek. When removing Cape Ivy from a shrub it's important to try and keep it intact as we remove it, because each small piece can become a new plant which left on the soil will take root again, defeating our efforts. We need to be aware as we pile it up that we don't let pieces “wander off”.

We will have some large sturdy bags that you can fill as you go then dump in central piles for pick up; however if you want to bring your green waste cart that would be great too. Just be sure to label the cart and any tools you bring with your name (and address).

If you have a pickup truck and are willing to do hauling runs to the dumpster collection area across from the Sharp Park Library, let us know. If we have several trucks then we can station them around the creek at various locations so we can easily access them.

If you feel like cutting some of the tall grasses, just be careful not to accidentally cut down any of the plants that others may have put in over the last few years.

Other Vallemar Earth Day project ideas: litter pickup along the Pigeon Trail, around Vallemar School, or the corner commercial area at Highway One, or whatever area you would like to focus on.

For now, PG&E has officially withdrawn their request to remove three Canary Island Date Palms along Reina Del Mar Ave. What this means is that for the next 6 months, the power company may perform extra trimming to keep the high voltage lines clear of the palm fronds. ...

Palm decision has been postponed, and is no longer on the April 26 city council agenda. More news to follow.

It was a lot of work, but between the combination of the Palm Sunday rally and bake sale, and the book drive yesterday, Kids 4 Change was able to raise a total of $1691. That's not too bad for a few weeks ...

Meanwhile neighborhood children in Kids 4 Change have joined in the
campaign. Some of those kids spoke at a rally March 28, and this week
they've been organizing books to sell to benefit their cause. (The
installation of taller utility poles, which would put greater distance
between the trees and the electricity, would be costly; PG&E
estimates more than $40,000; the group takes issue with the figure.)
Meanwhile, the kids have collected two truckloads of books, to be
sold at $1 each. The sale is Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 119 Berendos
Ave. in Pacifica.

two trees needed some trimming; the tree
at 847 Reina Del mar and the tree at 771 Reina Del Mar. The folks at
PG&E Vegetation Management have been really cooperative. The

health of the trees will not be
negatively affected"

Tuesday morning (4/13/2010), Asplundh, a PG&E sub-contractor came to trim two palms trees, 771 Reina Del Mar and 835 Reina Del Mar. Interestingly, two of the original trees identified for removal were not immediately at risk. ...
