April 21 is Earthday in Pacifica! Starting at 9 a.m. we will be set up at Bier Grove (across from the red house) and will have a sign in table, snacks, and some supplies.
There will be a number of projects to do. The top priority in Vallemar will be removing the Cape Ivy around the creek. The vine grows quickly and travels over shrubs, winds around branches, and finally overtakes the plants all around the creek. When removing Cape Ivy from a shrub it's important to try and keep it intact as we remove it, because each small piece can become a new plant which left on the soil will take root again, defeating our efforts. We need to be aware as we pile it up that we don't let pieces “wander off”.
We will have some large sturdy bags that you can fill as you go then dump in central piles for pick up; however if you want to bring your green waste cart that would be great too. Just be sure to label the cart and any tools you bring with your name (and address).
If you have a pickup truck and are willing to do hauling runs to the dumpster collection area across from the Sharp Park Library, let us know. If we have several trucks then we can station them around the creek at various locations so we can easily access them.
If you feel like cutting some of the tall grasses, just be careful not to accidentally cut down any of the plants that others may have put in over the last few years.
Other Vallemar Earth Day project ideas: litter pickup along the Pigeon Trail, around Vallemar School, or the corner commercial area at Highway One, or whatever area you would like to focus on.
