Take a look at this incredible snake sculpture painting, designed and constructed by Advanced Art senior Cami Sawyer. The snake is a three-dimensional form that comes off the painted canvas. Every part of the concept and ex*****on was entirely her own. The snake itself is created using paper, glue, and acrylic paint.

Cami will be graduating very soon. Join us in wishing her the very best as she begins her journey beyond the walls of the art room and Pekin School! Pekin Schools

Take a look at this incredible dragon and egg sculpture, designed and constructed by Advanced Art senior Rannen Harbison. Every part of the concept and ex*****on was entirely her own. The dragon itself is created using paper, glue, and acrylic paint, while the egg features carefully placed thumbtacks to form its striking scales.

Rannen—and her twin sister, who is also part of our Advanced Art class—will be graduating very soon. Join us in wishing them both the very best as they begin their journeys beyond the walls of the art room and Pekin School! Pekin Schools

Our 7th Grade Exploratory Art students recently dove into the world of fiber art with an exciting needle felting animal sculpture project! 🐑✨

Students learned how to build sturdy, three-dimensional sculptures by shaping wool with special barbed needles. Starting with basic forms and armatures, they brought their animals to life by adding color, texture, and detailed features that made each piece unique and recognizable.

Throughout the project, students focused on:
✔️ Safe and responsible tool use
✔️ Following step-by-step directions
✔️ Creative problem-solving and craftsmanship

Using foam pads, felting needles, and finger guards for safety, students gained hands-on experience with a brand-new medium while developing their artistic skills.

They wrapped up the project with a self-assessment and class critique, reflecting on their growth and celebrating their work.

The finished felt animals turned out amazing! 🎉🦊🐻Pekin Schools

Congratulations to Pekin’s Viewer’s Choice winner from last Friday’s Art Walk—seventh grader Dawson Wiggins for her artwork “B Burger.”

The Pekin Art Department had a successful kickoff at the combined Fairfield and Pekin School Districts Art Show, hosted by the Fairfield Art Association. The exhibit is on display throughout the month at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and features a variety of student artwork from both districts.

The 2026 Annual Art Show includes work in a wide range of media, including charcoal, acrylic, oil, watercolor, colored pencil, clay, and ink. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our students. Pekin Schools

I was once told by one of my mentors, David Kramer, an experienced art teacher from Fairfield—and I’m paraphrasing here—“sometimes you just have to get out of their way and let them create incredible things.” That idea has stuck with me.

In my Pekin Advanced Art class, I try to do exactly that. I give students the space to develop their own ideas, experiment freely, and take ownership of their learning. When they’re trusted to lead their creative process, the results are incredible—I consistently see some of the strongest, most meaningful artwork come from that approach.
