On Saturday, February 29, 1964, Mrs. Jean Smith entered the Broadway Liquor Store at the intersection of 11th and Broadway, which was owned by her friend, Mary Gillihan and her husband, F.E. Gillihan.
After hearing moans coming from the back room of the liquor store, Mrs. Smith went to investigate. Upon entering the back room of the liquor store, Mrs. Smith found the beaten body of Mary Gillihan.
At 6:15 pm, police were dispatched to the business, upon their arrival, they immediately summoned an ambulance. Mrs. Gillihan was transported to Western Baptist Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The initial assessment of the crime scene concluded with evidence supporting that Mrs. Gillihan had been caught off guard by her attacker. She was found laying towards the left with her head covered with a coat. It is believed the assailant struck Mrs. Gillihan with the stock of a shotgun, which appears to have knocked her out. Then repeated blows to the head.
The investigation commenced promptly following the incident. Several individuals who were considered potential suspects were interviewed within days of the murder. A reward totaling approximately $4,000 was established through contributions from various organizations and local business owners, including the Kentucky Wholesale Liquor Dealers Association, McCracken County Alcohol Beverage Association, the local union teamsters, grocer Wayne Sullivan, and multiple Paducah beer distributors.
To this day, this case has not been solved. I understand that several years have passed, but the family is hoping the case will be solved.
