I understand the frustration many of you are experiencing as you wait for your June vehicle registration renewal notices to arrive. Our office has received numerous calls and emails, and I want to provide some clarification.

While the renewal notices display the County Clerk’s name and address, they are printed and mailed by a vendor contracted through the Kentucky Department of Revenue. Unfortunately, the June renewal notices have been delayed due to the vendor’s failure to mail them on schedule.

Please know that you do not need to receive a renewal notice in order to renew your vehicle registration. The notice serves only as a courtesy reminder and is not required for renewal. If your registration is due this month, you may renew without waiting for the notice to arrive.

You may call our office 270-444-4700 and provide your license plate number or title number, and we will be happy to give you the amount owed over the phone.

I appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through circumstances that are beyond the control of our office. As always, my staff and I are here to assist you and answer any questions you may have.

Jamie Huskey,
McCracken County Clerk

One of the often misunderstood aspects of the property tax system is that the City of Paducah has two tax districts. The first is what some call the "old city" and the other is called the City Annex.

The "old city" is shown on this map in green. The City Annex is shown in blue. The City Annex reflects how the City of Paducah has grown over the last few decades.

Property owners in both tax districts pay taxes to the city. But even that statement needs clarification. "To the city" means to city hall. These taxes are for public services such as first responders, road maintenance, etc..

There is a big difference between these two tax districts. That being the school districts. Kids in the "old city" are in the Paducah Independent school district while kids in the City Annex are in the McCracken County school district.

Why are kids who live in the City Annex in the county school district?

Say your home is directly adjacent to the city limit. You call the city and say you want to be in the city. They agree to annex your property. After a process, your property is no longer in a county tax district. You are now in the City Annex. You are now part of the city. So, do your kids now attend city schools rather than county schools? No. The system was designed so that the kids continue to be in the county school district.

The county tax districts are composed of fire department responsibilities. In the map, the purple is the Concord tax district, the pink is the Hendron tax district, the dark green (bottom-right) is the Reidland tax district. The tan to the upper-left is West McCracken tax district. The brownish color to the bottom-left is Lone Oak tax district.

This map only shows a portion of McCracken County.
