Recently, Noble Research Institute brought their film crew to the ranch and spent time with Kelly, capturing “a day in the life” for a short film on regenerative winegrowing.
They happened to catch peak summer season when every corner of the ranch is bustling with life and movement, and our teams are BUSY.
For our vineyard crew, with harvest about to kick off, here are some of the day-to-day work they are immersed in:
🍇 Monitoring the fruit. In places where we don’t yet have bird netting up, we’re walking the rows and dropping damaged fruit, as well as the very green clusters that won’t ripen in time, so the vine concentrates its energy into the fruit that will.
📊 Sampling fruit, constantly. We check brix levels (the sugar content in the grapes) every week, sometimes several times a week. That number is one of the key ways we know when it’s time to pick.
🌱 Reading plant vigor. We’re paying close attention to the health and vigor of each vine right now, and marking the ones that tell us something—this will later on shape how we prune this winter and what we do next season. The vineyard is always teaching us what it needs.
🔧Training the young vines. Trellis wires are being strung and the next generation of plants are getting guided up the trellis stakes, so they are set up strong for the years ahead.
