HUD COMMEMORATES 22ND NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH
Happy National Homeownership Month (NHM)! Throughout the month of June and all year long, we’ll continue to demonstrate the vital role homeownership plays in building strong communities and empowering individuals and families across the nation. NHM is at the core of our mission – to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all.
Homeownership is not only a key component of the “American dream,” it provides stability, financial security, and is the primary way to build generational wealth. Through our policies and programs, we’re working to support low- and moderate-income households by addressing the racial homeownership gap, affordability, and limited housing supply challenges that are making owning a home out of reach for far too many. We are:
• Expanding homeownership opportunities to first-time homebuyers, particularly low- and moderate-income households and communities of color.
• Closing the racial homeownership gap by removing barriers and addressing systemic issues that have persisted for decades.
• Introducing and implementing policies and programs to help expand the nation’s housing supply.
• Helping homeowners who are struggling with their mortgage payments by providing mortgage servicers with tools to help them stay in their homes.
We also recognize that housing counseling is an essential part of a successful homeownership journey. Future homebuyers and current homeowners can reach out to HUD certified housing counselors for unbiased education and resources through our network of nearly 1,500 HUD-approved housing counseling agencies.
