Parolee Assaults Women In Painesville City

On Monday, January 9, 2023, Deputy Sheriff Arko was driving in the area near McDonald’s on Richmond St. in the city of Painesville, when he was flagged down by several bystanders. They explained that they were chasing a male who had just assaulted a woman. The Deputy found the male walking southbound on Richmond Street. Despite multiple commands to stop the male continued to walk while continually looking back at the Deputy. When a second Deputy arrived on scene the male stopped and sat on the sidewalk. The man was detained and turned over to the custody of the Painesville City police upon their arrival.

Later investigation found that the male, Paul Wyatt III, stopped a car driven by a woman on Jackson Street and assaulted her. He then walked over to a female standing on the corner of Richmond St. and Jackson St. He grabbed the female and demanded her cell phone. When she tried to get away he assaulted her. The female struck Wyatt in the face and she fell to the ground. It is at this point several bystanders saw what was going on and began to chase Wyatt until the Deputy arrived. This appears to be a random act and both women who were assaulted were unknown to the assailant.

Wyatt is a parolee from Cleveland. He was released from prison less than 2 weeks ago after serving time for aggravated robbery, assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

It is important to note that 46% of all felony cases, serious crimes, committed in Lake County and being handled by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office are committed by persons who live outside Lake County. This is another example of what Lake County law enforcement and our County criminal justice system is beginning to deal with on an ever-increasing level.

I commend the response of the bystanders in taking quick action to help the women being assaulted, and the quick response by local law enforcement.

This week's Lake County Sheriff’s Office History Spotlight …

This week’s history spotlight is on Former Sheriff Edward T. Rasmussen. Sheriff Rasmussen served as Lake County Sheriff from 1925-1928. Here he is pictured with his Sheriff’s Office staff. During his tenure the Sheriff’s Office handled the famous Velma West murder case. Prior to 1960 we have very few photos available of our Office so these few pictures of him and that era are keepsakes, and offer a peek into life during those years. And you have to love those fur coat fashions!

Here is a little more history of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office … the 1st Lake County jail

On March 6, 1840, the County of Lake was created out of an area that was once part of both Geauga and Cuyahoga counties. Originally it was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. With the creation of Lake County, a Sheriff was elected. The first Sheriff of Lake County was Luther Bates who served from 1840-1844.

However, the 1st formal jail was not built until 5 Sheriffs later under Sheriff Abner Axtell, who served from 1857-1860. The first jail in Lake County was built in 1859 just before the start of the Civil War. The design and plans were prepared by Colonel Morse. The jail’s contractor, Harvey Woodworth, built a two-story brick structure which had 8 cells, 4 on each floor. It was built on the property directly behind the court house that is now the rear parking lot of the court house, just west of the current jail. By 1975 the "old jail" had gone through an extensive renovation project increasing its housing space to accommodate an greatly expanding inmate population. However, with the emergence of the Ohio Minimum Jail Standards the jail could not meet the standards without great expense. In 1982 the decision was made to build a new jail. In January of 1990 nine female inmates and 91 male inmates were transferred to the current jail facility.

When the old jail closed there were over 800 people waiting to serve time in the jail for sentences of 5 days or less, misdemeanor or lower level offenses. When the jail population was moved to the new facility, the old jail was used to house those lower level offenders to take care of the jail time. Known as “Focal Point”, for one year people came to the jail, were not locked down, were housed in their own clothes and stayed until their sentence was completed.

Below are photos of the exterior of the jail and a few photos of the interior of that 1st jail. Sorry for the poor clarity but they are best photos we have been able to find of the old jail.

Limiting Weather Alerts

Weather Alerts on the SheriffsApp Cell Phone Application
While so many are excited to have the Lake County Sheriff’s Cell Phone App on their personal devices for the instant access to important information about road closures, press releases and jail rosters, some find the constant weather alerts by the National Weather Services too much. The good news is that you can stop the weather alerts you receive on our cell phone application. It’s simple:

1. In the upper right hand corner of the screen click the gear shape

2. Then click Notification settings

3. Under public channels you will see NWS Alerts. Simply move the highlighted green button to your left and it will stop all weather alerts

4. If you ever want the alerts back, repeat the process and move the button right to make it green

We hope this helps you improve your SheriffsApp phone application.

***Press Release***Richmond Rd. Two vehicle accident with injuries.

Press Release:

At 9:47am on January 1, 2023, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Richmond Rd. north of Newell St. in Painesville Twp. for a multi-vehicle injury accident.
On arrival, the investigation revealed that a brown Buick SUV, operated by a 47 year old male, was traveling north on Richmond Rd. when the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, striking a red, Kia head on. The Kia, operated by a 64 year old female and accompanied by a 90 year old male passenger, overturned as a result of the crash and went off the right side of the roadway before coming to rest in a ditch upside down. The two occupants of the Kia were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed by mechanical means by fire rescue personnel from Painesville Twp. and Grand River Fire Departments. The lone occupant/operator of the Buick was not injured.
Both injured parties were transported by ground unit to Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland for treatment where they continue to receive medical care. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor. The accident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The Lake County Traffic Crash Investigative Unit responded to the scene to assist. Personnel from Grand River Police, Painesville Police and ODOT responded to the scene to assist as well.

Scam Alert ... Calls from the Lake county Sheriff’s Office

Scams in our area are advancing technologically and thus becoming more and more convincing.

We recently have been fielding calls from residents here in Lake County, in Ohio and throughout the Country that Sergeant or Lieutenant _______ from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is calling and needs to speak to them about an urgent matter.

We want to make sure everyone is aware of this scam. They are using the names of supervisors who no longer work here or making up a totally false ones. They are very professional and believable. Share it with your friends and family, make them aware so they do not fall victim to these calls. The scammers give your enough real information and names you might recognize to make it believable, then play on your fears.

Never, never, never follow the directives of such calls. We will not call you and tell you there is a warrant for your arrest. We will show up and we will arrest you when such a warrant exists. We do not ask for money over the phone, nor we will ask for money if we were to come to your home.

When in doubt, call us (440)350-5620 or call your local police department … we are here to help.

Drug Seizure

On December 17, 2022 Lake County Sheriff Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the area of North Ridge Rd., and Narrows Rd., in Perry Township.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Ryker and his handler arrived on scene to assist with the traffic stop. During the traffic stop, K-9 Ryker showed positive indicators of narcotics inside the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 1 gram of he**in, Suboxone strips, multiple prescription narcotics, and narcotic equipment. A Painesville Township man was taken into custody as a result of the seizure.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office recently acquired two K-9’s who are trained in narcotics detection, criminal apprehension, search and rescue missions, and tracking purposes. Both K-9 Ryker and K-9 Sado have been able to assist in multiple missing persons cases, locating lost children, tracking of wanted persons, and assisting in the locating of narcotics. Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and our new K-9 companions are dedicated to making Lake County a safe and prosperous place for all.

12/19/2022

Christmas is a time of reflection. It is a moment in time when we all partake in our own personal Christmas Carol to see how we have impacted the lives of those around us and how they have inspired us in ways we failed to truly appreciate. This week all of us at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office want to thank each and everyone one of you for your support and kindness over this past year. While careers in criminal justice can indeed be challenging, we are reinvigorated each day by all of you in our community through your kind acts, gestures, and support.

This month so many of you will celebrate in many different ways. Whether through Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Kwanza, Christmas or other festive event, it will be a time for family and celebration. As you gather we want to wish you and your families all the best, and may the New Year bring you and yours all the best that life has to offer.

The Facebook Weather Dance

As the snowy weather, fortunately long delayed these past few months, begins in earnest we will again be posting weather advisements to our Lake County community on Facebook and on our PhoneApp (Lake Co. OH Sheriff).

We realize that this is Northeast Ohio and sometimes advanced weather forecasts we receive sometimes turn out to be wrong, either over-exaggerated, or under-exaggerated. As veterans of Lake County weather we understand that there might be no snow in Willoughby and 8 inches in Madison, or no snow in Painesville and 6 inches in southeast Lake County below I-90.

The purpose of our weather postings is not to alarm, but rather to keep people informed. Your routine commute can seem like a barren wasteland when you are broke-down on I-90 or Rt-2 during a winter blizzard, or idling at a standstill in snowy traffic jam. Our hope is by keeping you up-to-date on major winter weather possibilities it will allow you to give more time on your commute or prepare in advance so you don’t have to venture out in icy conditions.

Video “Fulfilling the Promise; A Proud Partner in the Lake County Community”

This short film examines all of the critical aspects and impacts that the Sheriff’s Office has in the community. In every division, every day, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office touches the lives of well over 1,500 people throughout Lake County.

Think about it. The jail handles the lives of 360+ inmates every day and they encounter all of their families, attorneys, volunteers and more. Our Communications Center handles over 600 calls a day and touches the lives of people in critical points in their lives through 9-1-1 calls and requests for service in critical areas. Our Court Deputies meets 100’s at the doors of our justice center, in the courtrooms, on transports, civil papers, and more each day. The front office deals with myriads of our residents all day both on the phone and over the computer. Each day our CCW Office meets 80-100 people who come through the doors. Add the detective bureau, administrative contacts and interactions in-county, the Road Patrol handling calls over 88 square miles for 55,000+ residents, our community outreach officer working with HOA’s and doing public events, and more one can easily see the grand scope of the lives of the people our members touch each day.

CCMEDIAPRO has done an exceptional job capturing the work that all of the members and divisions of our Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Sherwood, the entire command staff and I are extremely proud to serve alongside all them. They do amazing things every day and make a difference in the lives of so many each day.

Take a moment and see the wide range of work being done every day in our community by our members. I am sure you will agree, there is much for our community to be proud of.
