John was a strong supporter of the Friends of Morley Library.

The Morley Library community mourns the loss of John R. Gardner, who began his term as the library's Director in 1978 and retired in 1994. In addition to his love for books and his dedication to Morley, John was known for his fair-mindedness, his sense of humor, and his love of travel, especially to some of the most remote destinations in the world. He traveled to all 7 continents and more than 100 countries, and one of his favorite places was Tristan da Cunha, a small isolated island in the South Atlantic Ocean that had captured his imagination. John’s mother, one brother, two sisters, and a sister-in-law were all librarians, so John once jokingly wrote that he “must have been destined, or doomed, to be a librarian.” We will not forget John and his zest for life.

The Friends of Morley Library join the entire library community in mourning the loss of John R. Gardner, retired director of Morley Library. In addition to his love for books and his dedication to Morley, John was known for his fair-mindedness, his sense of humor, and his love of travel, especially to some of the most remote destinations in the world. One of his favorite places was the island of Tristan da Cunha, an isolated little island in the South Atlantic Ocean that had captured his imagination. He traveled to all 7 continents and to more than 100 countries. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, bicycling, walking, cooking, and entertaining. John’s mother, one brother, two sisters, and a sister-in-law were all librarians, so John once jokingly wrote that he “must have been destined, or doomed, to be a librarian.” He was supportive of the efforts of the Friends of Morley Library and was instrumental in the creation of the Book Cellar. The Friends’ Scholarship Fund was named for him. In his memory, the Friends have donated $100 to Ohio Living-Breckenridge Village Life Care in Willoughby, his designated charity.

We will not forget John and his zest for life.

Followers of the Tabletop Tree Auction

After a long evaluation of fundraising events, the Friends of Morley Library voted not to have a tabletop tree auction in 2017. We thank all of you who have so freely given your support to this activity. For many years, talented decorators created festive works of Christmas art and generous bidders returned annually to be a part of supporting Morley Library. Elaine Crane graciously allowed us to use Rider’s Inn to display the trees, and scores of volunteers spent countless hours on “Black Fridays” transporting the trees to the Inn and setting them up. To all the volunteers and library patrons who worked tirelessly to make this enjoyable event a success year after year, we offer our heartfelt thanks and trust that you will continue to support the fundraisers that help make Morley Library a treasured community asset.
