What you need to know: Matagorda County Urges Residents and Visitors to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall, Flash Flooding, and Dangerous Rip Currents Through Memorial Day Weekend

The Matagorda County Office of Emergency Management is advising residents, beachgoers, and visitors to remain alert as persistent heavy rainfall, flash flooding risks, and dangerous rip currents are expected to impact the Matagorda County coastline throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for coastal portions of the county as repeated rounds of thunderstorms continue to move across the region. Some areas along the coast have already received between 6 and 9 inches of rainfall, saturating soils and increasing the risk for street flooding and rapid water accumulation in low-lying areas.
In addition to inland flooding concerns, the National Weather Service has issued a High Rip Current Risk for Gulf-facing beaches. Rough surf and strong offshore currents are expected to create dangerous swimming and boating conditions through the weekend.
Holiday Weekend Weather Outlook
Storm chances are expected to remain elevated each day, ranging from 60% to 80%, with daytime temperatures in the mid-80s and high humidity producing much warmer “feels-like” conditions.

We are back up and running!

The City of Palacios is currently experiencing an internet outage from the storm last Friday. Phones and email are currently down until service is restored. We will update the public as soon as we’re back up and running.

The City of Palacios Animal Shelter is currently closed for intake until further notice.

If you find a stray or need to surrender a pet during this time, please consider these options:
🐾 Reach out to nearby shelters in surrounding areas
🐾 Contact local rescue groups or foster networks
🐾 Check with local veterinarians for guidance and resources
🐾 If possible, provide temporary care until intake reopens
