Fifty years later, fans are still marveling at Rick Monday’s great play.

The United States flag he rescued at Dodger Stadium in 1976 is now on exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, where it will reside through Labor Day Weekend.

In accordance with the U.S. Flag Code [U.S.C. Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 7(m)], on Memorial Day the United States flag is to be displayed at half-staff from sunrise until noon only, then raised briskly to the top of the staff.

This Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom. Today, we honor them, not just in words, but in how we live, serve, and support one another.

As we move into Memorial Day weekend, I would like to encourage everyone if you see somebody handing out red poppies, please take one and wear it to honor the sacrifices made by our military men and women. The American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion POST 85 will be set up at both entrances at Walmart in Palestine this morning.

Everyone is encouraged to wear a red poppy in honor of the sacrifices made by military men and women.

The Friday before Memorial Day is National Poppy Day. The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

On Sept. 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion Family, led largely by the American Legion Auxiliary, to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

American Legion Family members will be distributing the symbolic flower on National Poppy Day, which falls on May 23 this year, and everyone is encouraged to wear a red poppy to honor military sacrifices.
