Jerry Martin and Judy Lockwood of Palm Desert are producing El Paseo Cruise Night. The hope is that classic car owners will cruise El Paseo in relics, like this 46 Ford Woody, and bring business to the restaurants and shops along the upscale street. The cruises are tentatively scheduled to start Jan. 18 and would be held the first and third Fridays of each month. / Submitted by Jerry Martin

PALM DESERT — A new event geared to bring classic car enthusiasts to El Paseo and boost business received a thumbs up last week from the El Paseo Parking and Business improvement District board.
Jerry Martin of Palm Desert has been a classic car lover nearly all his life and with his partner Judy Lockwood created the idea for El Paseo Cruise Night.
News of the event was met with excitement at mydesert.com/facebook.
“I will totally cruise right over! Awesome!!! Can’t wait! Love Car Cruises,” wrote Adeline Burke, a former Palm Desert resident now living in San Diego.
“Looks like I will be busting out the 1946 Chevy Fleetmaster,” Hector H. Salas Jr. of Yuma, Ariz., wrote.
The event has been about three years in the making, said Martin. He is planning the cruises for the first and third Fridays of the month, with the first event tentatively scheduled for 4:30 to about 6 p.m. Jan. 18.
“We want the owners to cruise El Paseo. This is what makes us different than a car show. They can cruise as much as they want. We want them to also park on El Paseo and show off their cars,” Martin said.
He anticipates 100 to 300 cars at each event, though knows it may start small and grow as the word spreads.
“Boys love to show off their toys,” BID board member Janet Hanson said, adding this is a great way to bring more men and couples to El Paseo.
There is no cost to the city, merchants or car owners to participate, but Martin hopes the cruise will sprout an El Paseo car club.
The event doesn’t need City Council approval, but city staff will work with the promoters as the event develops, Ruth Ann Moore, economic development manager for the city of Palm Desert, said.
