As water challenges in the West continue, innovative solutions and regional cooperation are key, even when it means crossing state lines, boundaries that Mother Nature does not recognize.

It will be interesting to see how this develops, ever provides a roadmap for similar types of arrangements across the western United States, and perhaps even beyond national boundaries.

We are always looking for innovative ways to save water in the desert! ☀️💧Our Conservation Manager Clark Elliott recently represented Desert Water Agency at Peer to Peer 2026, a key conference for water efficiency professionals hosted by the California Water Efficiency Partnership (CalWEP). The event brings together hundreds of water conservation and utility leaders to collaborate, share ideas and discuss issues facing agencies across the state.

As a panelist, Clark participated in a dynamic discussion about non-functional turf (grass) and early steps the Agency has taken as water providers face statewide conservation regulations.
Thanks, Clark, for helping keep DWA at the forefront of water efficiency! 🙌

This is better than expected news for those water agencies, like Desert Water Agency and Coachella Valley Water District, that receive an annual allocation of water from the state, used to recharge our local aquifers here in the desert; without these valuable operations performed by these two agencies, the Coachella Valley would be a very different place, and most of us would not be living here.

These are your local property tax dollars at work. Thank you!

Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced an increase to the State Water Project (SWP) allocation for 2026. The allocation is now 45 percent of requested supplies, up from the previous allocation of 30 percent announced on January 29.

Yesterday, during its spring conference in Sacramento, ACWA announced the selection by its board of directors, on which I sit, of its next Executive Director, Karla Nemeth, currently the head of California’s Department of Water Resources. This morning she moderated a panel on the future of a more robust, meaningful and accountable Water Plan for our state and I believe that she showed why she is the right choice for her next role with ACWA.

Big news this morning out of the ACWA conference in Sacramento: Ms. Nemeth is an incredible choice to lead this association, the premier voice for water agencies in California, and I am both honored and proud to have been a part of this decision making process.

I am so proud to be a part of the leadership of ACWA and for this very forward-thinking initiative to make California’s water issues a part of the gubernatorial campaign conversation. Our state’s water future is too important to do otherwise.

California’s water future will require leadership, investment, and collaboration.

A new blog from the Policy Institute of California highlights key challenges facing the next Governor—from aging infrastructure to affordability, groundwater sustainability, and climate extremes.

ACWA’s Vision for Our Water Future echoes these priorities and outlines a path forward built on innovation and partnership. Learn more: www.acwa.com/vision
