xon and passed through Congress to protect the wild horses:

❝Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the west, that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the nation and enrich the lives of the american people, and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the american scene, it is the policy of the congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death, and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found as an integral part of the natural system of public land.❞

In 2004 George W. Bush signed an amendment to the Act - to re-legalize wild horse slaughter. This freed up more of the public land for oil, mining and cattle industries. When the Act was first passed, the BLM estimated there were 50,000 horses on the range. Today, they estimate there to be 36,000, although wild horse advocates and watch groups say there are as few as 20,000 still roaming free on the millions of acres. Everyone agrees the numbers are dwindling, with the largest concentration of horses being in Nevada. And still, the BLM engages in "zeroing out" horses from a particular area, and established populations have disappeared from several states. U.S Cattle Ranchers have a sweetheart deal with the Federal Government. For about the price of a cup of coffee per acre they lease public land to graze their herds. Land that our wild horses live on. Through political contributions and the Congressmen they own, they have stolen our public lands! And their bribes have gotten the Government to order the wild horses from their homes. So the horses are brutally rounded up and forcibly removed to holding pens: cramped, filthy prisons with no hope of running free ever again.
