Hatcher Pass Road Access Snowboarding Avalanches: Please come into the backcountry prepared. Avalanches can occur anywhere.

Much like what some of us hope the Motherload to be again someday, this is a gathering place for fans of Hatchers' 16 run, Paradise, Bush whack, and Archangel road access trails. Please feel free to post snow reports, offer/ask for a ride, split fuel costs, post lost and found notices, Youtube links, or just hang out and share pictures and stories. Take an avalanche course, read up and become informed on the warning signs and how you should be prepared if you are heading off the trails.

4/1/2024 Forecaster Observation:

Hatcher Pass is back in full winter following the Easter Storm with soft snow, below freezing temps and avalanche problems. Yesterday, we had two skier triggered avalanches. On 4/1, there was a slight break in visibility to make some professional observations. From Archangel lot we toured up President’s Ridge (East of Marmot) in a dense layer of fog to assess storm and wind slab thickness and sensitivity. The lack of visibility made seeing recent avalanche activity difficult. We did encounter whumphing & localized minor cracking in surface snow.

We witnessed audible whumphing in several locations at mid elevations below 3,500’. We crossed older mid-storm avalanche debris below cliffs and in gullies. 1 meter cracking underfoot in small localized areas, especially on terrain 35 degrees and steeper.

The untimely snow gods have visited Hatcher Pass and while the road is still open, it is suggested by Mat-Su Parks staff that you do not travel on the road.

Approximately 30 inches of new snow fell in the pass in the past 24 – 48 hours. A recent avalanche at approximately MP 14.8 has slide across a portion of the road. DOT has not closed the road and their avalanche team will be doing an assessment. Travel up the road is not recommended at this time, but it is open.

This week we have two "Daze" of music with Michael Kirkpatrick . Come enjoy the master of the mandolin create a magical space for us to splash around in. Friday and Saturday 3/10 & 3/11 from 4-7pm. The cafe will be serving up homemade food and drinks from 12-6. ✌️💖😋❄️🎶🏂🎵🍕🍲🍺🛷🥃🎶🎵🎶

❄️☃️ Well then. That pesky** snow brought an early closure for Independence Mine State Historical Park. Thanks to Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center for the photo cam! Skiers and snow enthusiasts rejoice! 🙌
