Long, long ago before the Boom Box...

I had one of these portable record players when I was a kid. It came with a little plastic gadget that fit over the spindle so you could also play 45s also known as “singles”. It was the one top 40 hit song, with another cut from the album on side B.
I also remember a marketing gimmick with paper records on the backside of cereal boxes. You cut it out with a pair of scissors. It had some kind of plastic coating on the surface and you could feel the grooves. It actually played quite well. I got mine off a box of Post Alphabet cereal (do they make that anymore?) It was the Archies “Sugar, Sugar”.

Place names can be interesting. And they almost always have something to do with local history. Our own town was named after George W. Palmer who built a small self-service style trading post near the Matanuska River in the early 1890’s.

George Palmer was a hardy, enterprising man. He was 38 when he arrived in Alaska following a short time as a logger in Seattle. Palmer’s first venture was gold mining. Palmer creek in Hope was also named for him. But building a store to provide goods for a growing number of prospectors proved more profitable.

Not long afterwards, he took over the vacated Alaska Commercial Company building continuing to sell dry goods, hardware and clothing.
Then in 1904 he was appointed as Knik’s U.S. Postmaster. [ source Barbara Hecker Inky Visits, The Frontiersman Nov 2012]

Later on, the Anchorage Daily Times held a contest to choose a name for the town. “Palmer” was chosen in honor of George W. Palmer.
