Never run electrical cords under rugs or through doorways where they can become damaged.

Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip.

Use the charger designed for your device.

Stop using batteries that swell, overheat, leak, smell unusual, or show signs of damage.

Do not charge devices where they block your exit.

Keep batteries and charging devices away from combustible materials.

Working carbon monoxide alarms provide an important warning when CO begins building inside your home.

Install and maintain CO alarms according to manufacturer instructions.

Never run a generator, vehicle, grill, or fuel-burning equipment inside your home or garage.

If your CO alarm sounds, get outside and call 911.

Cold weather is coming.

Keep anything that burns at least three feet away from heating equipment.

Never leave portable heaters running unattended.

Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet.

Have heating equipment serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.

Never use an oven to heat your home.

A warm house should also be a fire-safe house.

Over the last two weeks, our crews completed annual NFPA hose testing. We tested all attack lines and supply hoses from our front-line apparatus, a total of 7,210 feet of hose.

Why so much hose? Most of it is large-diameter supply hose. This 4-inch hose lets us connect to a hydrant and feed a fire engine with a steady water supply. In some parts of town, hydrants are far apart or nonexistent. In those areas, we switch to tanker shuttle operations to truck water to the scene.

Annual testing makes sure every foot of it is ready when we need it.

Know two ways out of every room.

Choose a meeting place outside.

Make sure everyone knows how to call 911.

Practice your escape plan with the entire family.

Keep an eye on what you fry.

Never leave cooking unattended.

Keep towels, paper products, packaging, and other combustible materials away from your stovetop.

If a small grease fire starts, turn off the burner and carefully cover the pan with a lid. Never pour water on a grease fire.

If the fire is spreading, get everyone outside and call 911.

One simple habit before bed makes your bedroom safer.

Close the door.

A closed bedroom door helps slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire and gives you more time to escape.

Before you go to sleep tonight:

Close bedroom doors.
Make sure smoke alarms are working.
Keep your escape route clear.
Keep your phone nearby if you need to call 911.

Close before you doze.
