A Message to Parents:

Understanding the Difference Between an E-Bike and an Electric Motorcycle

As electric-powered two-wheel vehicles become more popular, it’s important for parents to understand that not every vehicle with pedals is legally considered an e-bike.

A true e-bike is designed to meet specific legal requirements, including motor power and maximum assisted speed. These bicycles are intended to operate much like traditional bicycles, with electric assistance.

An electric motorcycle, on the other hand, is a motor vehicle. Many of these bikes are capable of much higher speeds and often resemble bicycles at first glance, but they do not meet the legal definition of an e-bike. These vehicles require registration, insurance, a valid driver’s license with the appropriate class, and must be operated in accordance with motor vehicle laws.

Unfortunately, many parents are purchasing high-powered electric motorcycles believing they are simply buying an e-bike. This misunderstanding can place young riders at risk and may lead to violations of state law.

Before making a purchase, take the time to research the vehicle’s specifications and verify whether it is legally classified as an e-bike or an electric motorcycle. Understanding the difference helps keep everyone safe and ensures your child is riding legally and responsibly.

The vehicle pictured in this image IS NOT an e-bike. You are looking at an electric motorcycle. This photo was taken during a recent incident in the borough and the background has been removed to protect the juvenile’s identity.

This is a Talaria TL2500 (also known as the Talaria X3) is a compact, lightweight electric dirt bike featuring a 5000W peak power motor, a 60V 40Ah battery, and a top speed of 47 mph.

We ask parents to PLEASE take time to research the product and state laws before making e-bike purchases.
