As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, the Palmetto CRA celebrates the cultures, traditions, stories, and contributions that help make our community so special.

Throughout the month, we had the opportunity to highlight members of our CRA team, local businesses, and the traditions that reflect the rich Hispanic heritage found throughout our community.

While Hispanic Heritage Month may be coming to an end, we are proud to continue celebrating the people and cultures that make Palmetto a vibrant place to call home.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to spotlight Casa Ruiz, a family-owned and operated Mexican and Latin American grocer bringing authentic flavors and traditions to Palmetto!

What began more than 20 years ago with Juan Ruiz as a small food truck vendor has grown into a family business serving communities in Plant City and now Palmetto.

Since opening its Palmetto location in March 2026, Casa Ruiz has continued its tradition of offering a wide variety of Latin American products, including its own Mi Sazón line of spices and dried chiles.

As part of the celebration, Palmetto CRA Director Rowena Young and CRA Program Coordinator Carolina Saravia recently visited Casa Ruiz to tour the store, connect with the people behind the business, and learn more about its contributions to the community. They are pictured alongside Chris, Perla, and Matthew of Casa Ruiz.

We’re proud to recognize Casa Ruiz and celebrate the Hispanic-owned businesses that contribute to Palmetto’s growing business community!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Carolina Saravia, CRA Program Coordinator!

Carolina shares what Hispanic Heritage Month means to her, along with the Salvadoran traditions and foods that are special to her family, including pupusas, yuca frita, and tamales.

Her heritage also plays an important role in how she serves the Palmetto community, helping connect Hispanic residents with the programs, resources, and opportunities available through the Palmetto CRA.

Thank you, Carolina, for sharing your story and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with us!

It’s a great example of redevelopment in action and the continued investment in the future of our community.

The Palmetto Hotel was once part of the businesses that made up the heart of Palmetto’s early commercial district. Historical accounts describe the hotel alongside local shops and businesses that lined the streets of downtown and served the growing community.

This historic photo gives us a glimpse of what Palmetto looked like years ago and how much our downtown has changed over time.

Do you remember the Palmetto Hotel or have a story about historic downtown Palmetto? Share it with us in the comments!
