Welcome to the official page of the Lake Monticello Police Department. This site is not for crime reports or calls for help. Lake Monticello Owners Association is a large and private gated community located in the northern tip of Fluvanna County, 15 miles east of Charlottesville. LMOA is a restricted access community patrolled 24-hours a day by its own private police force. According to the U.S. Census conducted in 2010, Lake Monticello had 3880 completed households with a population of 9,920. As of 2019, Lake Monticello has over 4,300 completed households with an approximate 12,000 to 12,500 resident population which makes it the 2nd largest homeowners association in Virginia, and the largest residential community of Fluvanna County. Criminal, traffic, and boating laws and the enforcement of the many of LMOA’s policies, rules, and regulations are the responsibility of the nine Officer Department.
Lake Monticello Police Officers are appointed as private police officers per §9.1-101 Code of Virginia, by the Fluvanna County Circuit Court. LMOA Police Officers have full arrest powers and have the same duties and responsibilities as any other Commonwealth of Virginia law enforcement officer. LMOA Police Officers must complete the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated training before receiving certification as police officers.
A separate staff of non-sworn personnel monitor resident, guest, and vendor vehicle entry into Lake Monticello’s central gated sections.
