On May 7, 2026, a small fire involving a clothes dryer occurred within the Marion County Jail. The fire was quickly identified and contained by on-duty staff, who were able to initially extinguish it and limit any damage to the appliance itself.
The Palmyra Fire Department responded to the scene and ensured there were no remaining hazards, while Marion County Ambulance and the Palmyra Police Department assisted as a precaution and with scene security.
We are thankful to report that there were no injuries, and all inmates and staff were accounted for and remain safe.
We would like to thank all responding agencies for their quick and professional response. The cause of the fire is currently under review. Additional information will be released if it becomes available.
