🔥 Increased Fire Risk Alert 🔥

There is an increased fire risk across Central Virginia today due to current weather conditions. Please use extra caution with anything that could spark a fire — including outdoor burning, grilling, or equipment that creates heat or sparks.

đźš« Avoid open burning
đźš« Properly dispose of ci******es
đźš« Be mindful with machinery and outdoor tools

Even a small spark can spread quickly. Let’s all do our part to keep our communities safe.

Stay aware and stay safe. đźš’

A warm and breezy day is expected across the region today. Mostly sunny and dry conditions will prevail, with afternoon high temperatures reaching the lower to mid 80s for inland areas. Immediate coastal locations will remain slightly cooler, with highs in the 70s.

Increased Fire Danger: Please be advised that there is an increased risk of fire danger today for central and eastern Virginia. The combination of dry conditions and breezy afternoon winds will make it easier for fires to start and spread. Please exercise caution and follow local burning regulations.

Looking Ahead: Moisture will begin to increase Wednesday into Thursday, bringing the potential for beneficial rainfall and a few scattered thunderstorms.

🚒👩‍🚒 Happy International Firefighters’ Day! 🔥👨‍🚒

What is IFFD?
It’s a global day to recognize the sacrifice, dedication, and courage of firefighters who keep our communities safe. Whether they are career or volunteer, these heroes risk everything to protect our lives and environments.

How did it start?
This day holds a deep history. It was established following a tragic bushfire in Linton, Australia, in 1998, where five firefighters lost their lives. The outpouring of support led to the first official IFFD on May 4, 1999—deliberately chosen to coincide with the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

How to show support:
* Wear a red and blue ribbon (representing fire and water).
* Light up your porch with a red bulb.
* Simply say "thank you" to a local first responder.

To all of our brothers and sisters in the fire service: We see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you for your service. 🔴🔵

Over 30 firefighters from Palmyra, Fork Union, Kents Store, Lake Monticello, and even departments as far away as North Carolina came together for an intense 2-day training event for the Victor Breeden Memorial Firemanship Training.

Crews trained in live fire conditions and worked through realistic, high-pressure scenarios including firefighter mayday and survival, ladder throws with obstacles, VES (Vent, Enter, Search), and primary search operations with some of the best instructors. The training culminated in a full burn of the structure, giving participants invaluable hands-on experience from start to finish.

Firefighters from multiple departments worked side by side, strengthening teamwork, sharpening skills, and building confidence in techniques that save lives.

Strong training. Stronger teamwork. 🔥🚒
