🌹 Did You Know? A Little Garlock History…

The beautiful grounds surrounding the Garlock House didn’t always look the way many remember them.

As O.J. Garlock expanded his estate, he purchased neighboring properties around his home. Historical accounts tell us that the nearby Townsend/Truax property was purchased specifically “to be made into a flower garden.” Another neighboring home, once belonging to the Rogers/Cady family, was later torn down as Garlock expanded and improved his grounds.

Garlock continued acquiring property along Clinton Street — so much that one early Palmyra historian wrote that he eventually owned “nearly all the street.”

Those grounds would later become known for the Garlock House’s beautiful gardens, including its famous illuminated rose gardens. 🌹

It’s amazing to imagine how different this corner of Palmyra once looked — and how O.J. Garlock helped shape it into the estate people would remember for generations.

Another little piece of Garlock history we’re excited to share. ❤️

GARLOCK: THEN & NOW 🕰️

We noticed something on the back of this old Bus Blum’s Garlock House postcard that we hadn’t realized before…

“Overnight Accommodations.” ❤️

Along with gracious dining, weddings, banquets and private parties, Garlock once welcomed guests to stay overnight.

We love discovering that as we give Garlock its next chapter, we’re also bringing back a little piece of what it once was — a place to stay, gather and celebrate.

The property has certainly changed over the years, but that beautiful old house is still here, and we’re working hard to preserve as much of its character as we can.

And we’d love your help with that…

Do you remember any of the little details inside Garlock?
The colors, chandeliers, wallpaper, woodwork, artwork, furniture — anything that made the house feel like Garlock?

You never know… one of those details may just find its way into its next chapter. ❤️

GARLOCK RENOVATION UPDATE 🏡🖤

A few more pieces of Garlock are coming back to life…

After several weeks of scraping, prepping and painting, the exterior is really starting to take shape! All of the new windows are in, the exterior painting is nearly complete, and the doors have gone black. We still have trim work to finish and a final coat to put on the doors, but we couldn’t wait to share the progress!

We also tackled the porch ceilings. The old painted wood still showed evidence of the 1965 fire, so seeing the newly finished ceilings has made quite a transformation.

Another big change was removing the large existing wheelchair ramp. It will be replaced with a new electronic accessibility ramp, allowing us to maintain handicap accessibility while opening up the exterior and porch area.

And sometimes the best part of renovating an old house is what you uncover along the way. We were able to salvage a beautiful older light fixture we discovered during the renovation. We don’t know its exact history, but we loved it enough to make sure it stayed with the house. And beneath layers of paint, we uncovered beautiful leaded glass that had been hidden away.

We may not know the full story behind every piece we find, but whenever we can preserve something special, we will. ❤️

Little by little, Garlock is revealing itself again.

“Have DINNER at The Garlock House.” ❤️

We came across this wonderful advertisement from 1951, inviting people to 401 East Main Street for full-course dinners and special plates.

And it got us thinking about what’s coming next…

The Garlock House may not be reopening as a restaurant, but people will once again gather here around the table.

As part of the renovation, we’re creating a large gourmet kitchen designed for families, friends and groups to cook, gather and share meals together — or to welcome a caterer for those extra-special occasions.

There’s something pretty special about knowing that more than 75 years after this ad appeared, dinner will still be bringing people together at The Garlock House. ❤️

WHO WAS OLIN J. GARLOCK?

Take a close look at this photograph. ❤️

That’s Olin J. Garlock in front of the Garlock House—and the automobile he’s sitting in tells a fascinating piece of Palmyra history.

🚗 In March of 1900, O.J. Garlock and W.W. Williamson each took delivery of a “Locomobile,” at a cost of $760!

Olin J. Garlock (1861–1942) was an inventor and entrepreneur whose work led to the creation of the Garlock Packing Company, a name that would become an important part of Palmyra for generations.

What makes this photograph so special to us is the house behind him—the same house we’re working to bring back to life today.

We’re not simply renovating an old building. We’re preserving a piece of Palmyra’s history while preparing it for a whole new generation of memories. ❤️

So- what’s next for the Historic Garlock House??

Many of you have asked if the Garlock House will once again become a restaurant. While that isn’t part of our plans, we’re excited to share what is coming!

The Historic Garlock House is being thoughtfully restored as a place to gather, celebrate, and create lasting memories.

Once complete, the home will be available for:
• Family reunions
• Bridal & baby showers
• Weekend retreats
• Business meetings & workshops
• Small celebrations
• And many other special occasions

The home will feature a large gourmet kitchen, beautiful dining spaces, a spacious game room with a pool table and bar area, and overnight accommodations for more than 20 guests. Best of all, the entire home will be 100% handicap accessible, allowing even more people to enjoy this historic property.

For dining, all events will be catered or guests may prepare their own meals in the fully equipped gourmet kitchen.

We also have a few surprises in store that we can’t wait to share with you! Thank you for following along as we bring this incredible piece of Palmyra’s history back to life. We can’t wait to welcome you through its doors.
