Our public garden neighbors at San Francisco Botanical Garden will be hosting their annual event, Flower Piano, from September 10th - 20th. Flower Piano returns for its 11th year with 130 performances, 12 pianos, 11 days of music, and plenty of open play opportunities immersed in the beauty of the San Francisco Botanical Garden. 🪴

Gamble Garden members can reserve free reciprocal admission tickets online in advance along with an additional 20% off of Flower Piano Zoox Lounge.
Zoox Lounge will be featuring special performances from local headliners, premium bars and food, seating, and more! Present your membership card upon arrival for priority member entry and a smooth start to your visit. 🎟️

September is a transitional month as hints of Autumn begin to appear in little seasonal shifts. Take advantage of the last few weeks of summer by attending any of our class and event offerings this month.🌿

We are highlighting Parent & Me Yoga for families with little ones who are still learning how to name and process big feelings. Yoga offers a playful, low-pressure way to build those skills alongside a trusted adult built around connection. Sharing breath, space, and a little quiet time together away from screens and schedules all while being immersed in a serene garden setting is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. 🧘‍♀️

We are also highlighting California Native Garden Design instructed by Corey, Gamble’s very own Garden Director. This class is perfect for homeowners looking to design their yards with drought-tolerant and low maintenance species such as succulents, cacti, and salvias, and gardeners curious about native-plants that thrive in our Mediterranean climate zone region. Learn about the benefits of planting native plant species to save water, reduce garden maintenance, and support the local ecology in our area. 🌱

Roots & Shoots garden-based science program takes second and third grade students on a field trip to Gamble Garden, and teaches them about nature, ecology, the environment, and community through hands-on exploration in the garden. 🌿

The Roots and Shoots program was started in 1985 by Mary McCullough and Molly Brown, with the support of Kiyomi Masatani, a third grade teacher at Walter Hays Elementary School.🌻

The Roots & Shoots curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards and utilizes every aspect of Gamble Garden’s exceptional garden as its learning laboratory. Students work in small groups with our talented volunteers to learn about the world around them and experience the wonder of nature.🌞

In order to continue to make this program possible we are seeking volunteers to help educate the next generation of leaders. If you are interested in being a Roots and Shoots program volunteer, please head to our website’s “Education” tab and fill out an application. ( Education > Roots and Shoots)🫶🏽

This year we are offering scholarships for Title 1 schools and reimbursements for school bus rentals. 🚌

This Friday, August 28th, indulge in an afternoon tea party, sipping teas with herbs grown right here at Gamble Garden! 🫖
Guests can taste herbs on their own, experiment with creating custom blends, and enjoy a spread of homemade sweet and savory baked goods. Vegan and gluten-free options will be available. 🧁

Our garden staff will be on hand to share their knowledge about different herbs, how to prepare them, and how to grow them at home. You’ll leave refreshed, inspired, and maybe even with a new favorite tea! 🍵

Learn how to care for your pruning shears with Gamble’s Horticulture Staff and Plant Geek, Cheryl! 🌿

Our gardening tools go through a fair share of use by over 300+ garden volunteers throughout the year, and it’s a non-negotiable to learn how to maintain our tools properly for longevity. Healthy pruners, happy gardening! 👩🏽‍🌾

Cheryl earned a B.S. in Computer Science from Cal Poly SLO and spent much of the ‘90s as a graphic designer before following her curiosity into horticulture, earning an A.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Foothill College. Today, she specializes in Mediterranean climate design and is an incredible chalk artist amongst her many other talents.

In the South America garden bed we are growing two types of amaranth, kabocha squash, lima beans, nasturtium, stevia, and cilantro.

In the Edible Garden, we have beds with plants from five regions: Africa, Asia, South America, North America, and the Fertile Crescent.

Each regional bed includes planting selections that mimic the Three Sisters method, where there is a tall grain for structure, legumes to increase nitrogen levels, and squash to protect the soil and retain water.

Now is the time to visit our Edible Garden beds as they are exploding with a bountiful harvest of crops. Be sure to keep an eye on them throughout the season to witness their transformation develop as the late summer heat starts to creep in.

🐝 National Honey Bee Day is tomorrow, August 15th, and we are celebrating the work of honey bees and our local beekeepers!

The contribution that honey bees make through the buzzzzy work of pollination, and beekeepers who lovingly tend to their hives, not only gives us honey-based products such as honey, beeswax, and propolis, but their silent work aids in the production of our agricultural food systems, local ecology, and biodiversity of our planetary health. 👣 🌎

Ways to Bee-Mindful:
🌻 Plant bee-friendly flowers
🌿 Protect your garden from harsh chemicals/ pesticides
🍯 Purchase honey locally from your neighbourhood beekeeper or farmers’ markets
💧 Set up a bee drinking station for thirsty bees using a shallow container, rocks, and twigs for them to perch on
