Check out Palo Alto’s free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) station to easily dispose of paint, batteries, propane, motor oil, and other items that don’t belong in your curbside carts! Also come by the HHW Reuse Zone to pick up free paints, cleaning products, and more for your next home project.

Consider organizing your fridge and pantry into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack sections. Did you know most common household cleaning products are toxic and cannot be poured down the drain or placed into your curbside collection container? If you have old cleaning products that you cannot use anymore, bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Station and dispose of them responsibly. We make it easy to do the right thing! No more plastic bags - effective January 1, 2026, the State of California mandated that grocery stores, retail stores with a pharmacy, convenience stores, food marts, and liquor stores no longer distribute plastic carryout or pre-checkout bags. These State requirements increase Palo Alto’s previous single-use checkout bag requirements by not allowing any plastic bags, regardless of thickness. Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable carryout bag. Stores can provide bags that are made from recycled paper or compostable plastic that are BPI certified or have the word "Compostable" printed on them.
