While the idea of an Chatbot running for elected office may seem like something out of William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk masterpiece Neuromancer, it's actually happening. Yes, we are serious. How does modern society reconcile accountable and transparent with algorithms and learning models that even at the open source level are still very much a “black-box” technology? And does deus ex machina spell doom for democracy?
Check out our newest blog "AI Serving Elected Office: Deus ex Machina" up on the OSET website. It's definitely worth reading!

A must-read in the newest featuring an insightful interview with Arizona Secretary of State, , shedding light on the challenges that election officials and poll workers have faced over the past four years. It's striking that two of the prosecutions for threatening an election official in Arizona involve individuals from outside the state. Even more concerning are the direct threats from local constituents to AZ election offices, posing a real and immediate danger.

Imagine this - an election official's dogs being poisoned as a form of intimidation. This goes beyond any form of speech or protest protected by the First Amendment. So, we ask you - do accurate, secure, transparent elections matter to you? If your answer is "Yes", understand that these qualities are compromised when our election staff must focus on preparing for life-threatening situations rather than their administrative duties.

We sincerely hope that in 2024, we will see a greater seriousness towards threats and intimidation tactics aimed at election officials. Some of these alleged threats fall under current domestic terrorism statutes.

When we fail to prioritize the safety of those who risk their lives and their families' well-being each day to administer elections, it sends a disheartening message - that these officials are disposable. Let's instead send a powerful message this election season by holding accountable those who commit criminal offenses posing a clear danger to both election staff and voters.

The United States has always been seen as a beacon of stability, prosperity, hope, and strength worldwide. In our rapidly changing world today, protecting our elections and those responsible for conducting them should be our topmost priority.

So let's start a conversation here - how can we better safeguard our democracy?

Biden’s Justice Department is too “worried about political blowback” to protect election workers, says Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes.

Brace yourselves, the 2024 election cycle is just around the corner! As you gear up for the holiday season, your diligent local and state election officials are already burning the midnight oil, prepping for an election that promises to be a thrilling, high-stakes affair. We're expecting voter turnout to break all previous records!

But why aren't our election officials popping the champagne?

Consider this: there are 10,000 voting jurisdictions in the US, over 116,000 polling places and almost 250 million eligible voters. But here's a startling fact - there are less than one million poll workers nationwide.

Imagine being tasked with preparing Thanksgiving dinner for your family and a few thousand friends and neighbors. You have only 2 or at most 5 helpers to plan, prep, cook, serve and clean up. Sounds unimaginable? That's what our election officials are wrestling with.

But here's where you come in! You have the power to bring about change in your community by stepping up as a poll worker! Let's not leave our hardworking officials high and dry - join them in shaping our democracy!

We're thrilled to introduce you to a project that our team has been working on passionately: an intelligent, secure, AI-powered agent designed to manage the anticipated surge of inquiries and information requests about elections.

Meet "Zora" (we're open to name suggestions!), an AI software project that aims to facilitate meaningful conversations about election administration in the state where it's implemented. We're aiming for Zora to be ready for pilot runs in up to 4 key states by the 2024 election, including their primaries. The risks of disruptions, misinformation, and confusion fueled by generative AI are real. While we don't want to amplify these threats unnecessarily, it's undeniable that services like GPT are being misused with the intent of causing electoral upheaval.

That's where Zora comes into play. This intelligent agent is designed to engage users in composed, intellectually honest discussions about any election-related queries they may have. And here's what sets Zora apart: we're building a unique "language model" (the bedrock of any AI tool) that is safeguarded against potential compromise.
But that's not all - Zora's responses come with links to authoritative content and resources for further information!

To complete Zora in time for 2024 pilots we need your support. Like all of our open-source election software projects, these are public tools that depend on tax-deductible public funding. Please join our mission to fortify the foundations of our democracy with the safe, responsible use of AI to provide credible, legitimate election information.

About the TrustTheVote Project

All over the world, election integrity and voter engagement are at risk because of obsolete and insecure election system. We have a solution: reinvent election technology, using open data, open standards, and open source to increase confidence in elections and their outcomes, and help preserve democracy.

The TrustTheVote Project is the work of the non-profit -- and non-partisan -- Open Source Election Technology (OSET) Institute. Established in November 2006 by a couple of concerned technologists in the Silicon Valley, OSET is a California non-profit corporation dedicated to the public benefit. Originally the organization was known legally as the Open Source Digital Voting (“OSDV”) Foundation. In late 2015, the Foundation became the OSET Institute, to reflect the reality that OSET is focused on education, research, and development of election technology innovation
