Hey, Palos Park, drive sober and slower this Labor Day!
Palos Park Police encourage all motorist to celebrate responsibly this holiday weekend amidst the national enforcement crackdown on impaired driving that runs through September 7.

Labor Day should end with cookouts and family, not handcuffs and court dates. Yet every year, someone decides that “I’m fine to drive” is a solid plan. Spoiler: it’s not.

PPPD Officers STEP it UP and will be out as part of the PPPD Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) focusing on impaired drivers. If you drink, don’t drive. Call a friend, grab a rideshare, or plan ahead because nothing ruins a holiday faster than a DWI arrest and a tow bill.

This week, Commissioner Rebecca Petan, Village Manager Jeannine Smith, Public Works Director Mike Sibrava and I had the opportunity to attend a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) meeting, where we engaged in productive conversations about managing and moving water—including stormwater—within our communities.

I appreciate every opportunity to discuss thoughtful solutions that promote environmental sustainability, strengthen our infrastructure, and support the long-term well-being of our residents.

Traffic Enforcement Update

The Palos Park Police Department continues its strict enforcement efforts along LaGrange Road in coordination with the Cook County Sheriff’s Police, while the Village continues to advocate for legislation that would provide municipalities with additional tools to address reckless and dangerous driving.

From late July through early August, the Palos Park Police Department conducted hundreds of traffic stops, resulting in citations for a variety of moving and equipment violations, including speeding, aggravated speeding, improper or excessively loud mufflers, and other violations.

These enforcement efforts are in addition to traffic stops and citations issued by the Cook County Sheriff’s Police.

The Village also continues to advocate for legislation that would allow municipalities like Palos Park to use automated speed enforcement in appropriate safety zones.

Under current Illinois law, municipalities generally cannot use automated systems to record vehicle speeds for enforcement purposes, except in specifically authorized circumstances. Chicago currently has authority to operate its automated speed enforcement program, while legislation such as House Bill 1389 would expand that authority to additional municipalities, including municipalities in Cook County.

Palos Park is also monitoring efforts related to noise reduction programs and continues to advocate for additional tools that could help address excessive speeding and vehicle noise along LaGrange Road.

The Village remains committed to working with our law enforcement partners and pursuing legislative solutions that will help improve safety for everyone traveling along LaGrange Road.
