On Thursday 05/23/2026 at approximately 11:20am, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for making an illegal left turn.

During the traffic stop, the driver gave consent for a vehicle search, and officers located a loaded firearm not registered to the driver, drug paraphernalia, and multiple dollar bills folded concealing narcotics.

The driver was subsequently arrested for a weapons violation and multiple drug charges. Another day, another gun off our streets!

Last week, on May 21st, the South Bay Police & Fire Memorial Foundation held their 50th Annual Medal of Valor Award luncheon where Officer John Zabukovec was presented with the Life Saving Award. The required criteria for this award include firefighters or police officers assigned to a South Bay Mutual Aid Pact Department to provide recognition for performing a distinct and successful life saving act of another human being under nonstandard circumstances (not in the normal, everyday scope of service).

Officer Zabukovec was honored for his actions on October 30, 2025, when he responded within 2 minutes to a traffic collision on Paseo Del Mar involving a bicyclist who had suffered a catastrophic neck injury with severe arterial bleeding. Recognizing the immediate threat to life, he took decisive action—applying direct pressure, using a hemostatic dressing, and manually controlling the bleeding until paramedics arrived.
Paramedics later confirmed that Officer Zabukovec’s actions were lifesaving and directly prevented a fatal outcome. His calm, courage, and decisive medical intervention exemplify the highest standards of public service.

Early morning on May 6th, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. Upon contacting the driver of the vehicle, a nitrous oxide canister was observed in the vehicle and the driver admitted to being in possession of it. This provided probable cause for a search of the vehicle which ultimately uncovered an unregistered and loaded firearm. The driver was booked on both the possession of the nitrous oxide and a weapons charge. This is another example of great police work by our night shift officers.

PVEPD Detectives Arrest Caregiver in Elder Financial Abuse Case

Last month, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department received a report of suspected elder financial abuse involving a caregiver. During the investigation, Detectives obtained both an arrest warrant and a search warrant.

Detectives traveled to Palmdale to serve the warrants, where they safely arrested the suspect and conducted a search of her residence.

The suspect is accused of stealing from and fraudulently using a senior resident’s financial accounts. Detectives believe there may be additional victims and are actively seeking anyone who may have been affected.

Anyone who may have had contact with the suspect in a caregiving capacity, or has related information, is encouraged to contact our Detective Bureau.

After previously reporting zero burglaries so far in 2026, PVEPD is sharing this update regarding the first residential burglary reported this year.

On April 25, 2026, PVEPD responded to a residential burglary in the 3600 block of Navajo Place. Sometime between approximately 5:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., unknown suspect(s) are believed to have climbed a rear-facing balcony and smashed a rear balcony glass door to gain entry into the residence. Property was taken from the home, and the suspect(s) then fled. The PVEPD Detective Bureau responded to process the scene and assist in the search for evidence.

Because the backyard of the property borders a trail, investigators believe the suspect(s) may have used that area to access the residence. Residents, especially those living near trails, are encouraged to remain alert, report suspicious activity, use interior and exterior lighting, and activate house alarms.

If you see suspicious activity, please contact PVEPD.
