UPDATE:

BMCD will postpone its WALS treatment due to weather.

Beach Mosquito Control District will be conducting a WALS (Urban) treatment the week of June 1st - June 5th weather permitting.

The treatment will begin at about 2:00 a.m. and continue until just before sunrise,

The area to be treated (see attached map) will be in areas of Zone 4.

Wide Area Larviciding (WALS)
What is WALS (Urban)?
Urban WALS (Wide Area Larviciding) treatments are a method of ground Larviciding used to treat the juvenile (aquatic) stages of mosquitoes.

Urban WALS targets artificial containers, such as tires, buckets, plant trays, tarps & other cryptic areas that ground technicians may have limited or no access to.

It is a larvicide technique using a fine mist sprayed from a truck, that drifts into these hard to access areas.

The material used in Urban WALS is S-Methoprene; an insect growth regulator (IGR) that is target specific.

It has been relatively dry. Ditches and low areas have largely dried up, but rain is coming!

Still seeing a lot of mosquitoes around your home?

We have had our techs canvasing several neighborhoods and we are seeing an abundance of artificial container mosquito breeding.

The number of mosquito larvae found this week is well into the thousands!

Dump & Drain, or the mosquitoes will remain!

Beach Mosquito's technicians are out and about conducting pre-treatments of habitual breeding sites.

What are these sites?

These particular sites are considered habitual breeding due to their history of larval surveillance results.

The operations manager runs a 1,3,5 & 10 year breeding history report on geolocated sites in the district. These pre-treatment sites show constant, or near constant history of breeding mosquitoes.

It should be noted, that these sites consist of retention ponds, swales, low areas, swamps et al. Generally pre-treatment sites do not consist of ditches unless the ditch has the established history of breeding & an established history of having little to no flow.

What are pre-treatments?

The materials we use for these pre-treatments are specifically labeled so that pre-treatments, even during dry conditions are allowed.

The active ingredient of these pre-treatments are usually either Methoprene or B.T.i.

Methoprene is an insect growth regulator (IGR) that mimics the juvenile hormone of the mosquito larvae, ultimately preventing the larvae from developing all the way into an adult.

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (B.T.i.) a naturally occurring soil bacteria, interacts with the enzymes in the larvae midgut and causes mortality.

By doing these pre-treatments, it helps with having a proactive approach to control that is constituted by established history of environmental factors, as well as allowing the operations team to focus on the vast number of intermittent breeding sites.

One of the many methods of mosquito population surveillance is conducting mosquito landing rates.

In Florida Administrative Code 5E-13, conducting mosquito landing rate counts is one of the methods that mosquito control uses to determine if treatment is necessary.

Landing Rate Counts are just like it sounds. The mosquito control technician will go out in the field and locate suspected adult mosquito activity. Once there, the technician will count how many mosquitoes land on them per minute.

Once that is done, the technician will then log this data into a database, and the district's Entomologist & operations team will review the data and make recommendations to the district's director.
