Pushing in the new Engine 1!
The tradition of pushing in a new fire truck dates back to the 1800’s when pumper carts had to be detached from their horses and pushed into the station by hand. Today, firefighters still celebrate receiving a new truck in the same fashion.
New Engine1 is a Sutphen Engine that replaced a 17 year old apparatus. The old Engine 3 was sold and the funds go directly back into buying the next replacement apparatus.
The purchase was approved in December 2022 and funded through the City’s dedicated ¼-cent retailers’ sales tax, which supports the operation and maintenance of the fire station and its equipment. No property-tax funding was used for this purchase.

The City of Paola is excited to announce the expected arrival of our new fire engine in early September.

The new apparatus will carry the call sign Engine 1—a welcome throwback to past Paola fire engines. Its design honors the legacy of past engines by bringing back proven features, including a flat-roof cab, manual valves, a low hose bed, and a booster reel.

While Engine 1 has a simple, work-focused design, it incorporates current safety features to protect our firefighters and the community. The design is intended to reduce future maintenance costs and avoid issues often associated with overly complicated apparatus systems.

Built by Sutphen, this engine reflects the company’s motto: .

Engine 1 will replace Engine 3, an apparatus that is nearly 17 years old. This replacement will help ensure the Paola Fire Department remains equipped to respond reliably when our residents need us most.

HOUSE FIRE - At approximately 10:24 a.m., Paola Fire was dispatched to a house fire in the 800 block of E Osage St. Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department and Louisburg Fire Department were dispatched for automatic aid, as well as Miami County EMS and Paola Police Department. Units arrived at 10:33 a.m. to find light smoke showing and began an interior fire attack. All occupants were able to escape prior to arrival. One occupant was treated by EMS for burn injuries and transported to an area hospital. A primary search of the residence was completed. Three cats were located; unfortunately, two were found deceased. The fire was placed under control at 10:55 a.m. Our thoughts go out to the family affected by this incident.

Smoke detectors were located in the home but were not believed to be operational during the fire. PFD would like to remind everyone to ensure smoke detectors are located on all levels of your home. Ensure that they are tested and working at least twice a year. Also, make sure expired detectors are replaced. You can contact your local fire department if you need assistance in obtaining smoke detectors.

The Miami County Parade is on Wednesday July 22nd. Please be aware of the no parking zones after 5pm (07/22) marked below. Officers will be out marking the parade route with no parking signs the night before the parade.
