The Miami County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Miami County First Responder Agencies, is excited to host the 2026 National Night Out!

Bring the family and join us for an evening of fun, games, demonstrations, and great conversation with the first responders who serve Miami County every day.

National Night Out is a great opportunity to meet members of local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other first responder agencies while strengthening the relationships that help make our communities safer and stronger.

Come out, bring the kids, meet your local first responders, check out equipment and demonstrations, and enjoy a fun evening with your community!

We’ve been busy the past couple of weeks helping kiddos get ready for back to school! 📚✏️

Miami County Health Department staff were proud to be part of Paola’s Serving Our Students event, Osawatomie’s Serving Our Students event, and Broadmoor Elementary’s Back-to-School Night and Community Fair. We loved being out in the community, connecting with families, and helping students and families prepare for a healthy and successful school year!

A special thank you to SOS Serving Our Students, the Osawatomie Rotary Club , and Broadmoor Elementary School - USD 416 for having us and giving us the opportunity to be part of these events. We appreciate all you do to support Miami County’s children and families!

We wish all of the students, teachers, and school personnel a wonderful school year! 🍎📓

Today, during the Miami County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Miami County Health Department WIC Program was honored to receive a proclamation recognizing National WIC Breastfeeding Week.

Our WIC team, alongside the dedicated volunteers of the Miami County Breastfeeding Coalition, is committed to providing education, encouragement, and resources that empower families to meet their breastfeeding goals. Through compassionate support and evidence-based guidance, we strive to give parents and infants the healthiest possible start.

We are grateful to the Board of County Commissioners for recognizing the importance of breastfeeding and the positive impact it has on the health and well-being of families in our community.

Thank you to our WIC staff, coalition volunteers, community partners, and the families we have the privilege to serve. Together, we are helping build a healthier Miami County.

🥬 Lettuce Talk About a Recent Health Alert: Cyclospora Cases Under Investigation in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is continuing to investigate cases of cyclosporiasis (Cyclospora) linked to a nationwide outbreak associated with certain recalled iceberg lettuce products.

⚠️ Recall Information
The recall currently includes select Marketside brand iceberg salad and shredded lettuce products sold at Walmart with "Best if Used By" dates of July 18 through August 3, 2026. Some iceberg lettuce distributed to restaurants and other food service establishments has also been recalled. Additional products may be identified as the investigation continues.

🤒 Symptoms typically develop 2 to 14 days after exposure and may include:
• Frequent watery diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Abdominal cramps and bloating
• Nausea
• Vomiting (less common)
• Low grade fever (less common)

If you develop these symptoms, especially after eating fresh produce, contact your health care provider. Treatment with antibiotics can help shorten the illness.

🧼 While washing fruits and vegetables is always recommended, it may not completely remove Cyclospora. Individuals at higher risk for severe illness, including older adults, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and those receiving chemotherapy, should consider cooking fresh produce or avoiding it during periods of increased Cyclospora activity.

Please check your refrigerator for recalled products and dispose of or return any affected items.

The Diagnostic Imaging Centers Mobile Mammography Coach will be at the Miami County Health Department next Monday! If you're due for your annual mammogram, now is the perfect time to prioritize your breast health.

Breast cancer is most treatable when it's found early, and routine mammograms are one of the best tools we have for early detection. Taking just a little time for a screening today could make all the difference tomorrow.
