If you could read the whole house before your coat was off, you learned that somewhere.

The instant you stepped through the door, you knew. The weight of the air, the particular quality of the quiet, which way the evening was going to go. You could tell from the sound of a cabinet closing, from the set of someone's shoulders, from a silence with a texture you had learned to read like weather. Before you had your shoes off, you already knew who to avoid and how small to make yourself.

People call that intuition, but it was not intuition. It was surveillance, and it was survival. A child in an unpredictable house becomes an expert reader of danger, because reading it early was the only way to get ahead of it. The scanning was not a gift you were born with. It was a skill you built because you had to, because knowing what was coming was the closest thing to safety available to you.

And it worked. You are here. The vigilance did its job, kept you a step ahead, got you through. But a skill built that young does not switch itself off just because the danger is gone. So you still do it. Still read every room you enter, still track the moods of people who are not a threat, still walk in scanning for a storm that is no longer coming.

You are allowed to stop scanning now. That is the part your body has not caught up to yet. The house you had to survive is behind you. The rooms you walk into now are, most of them, safe, and the ones that are not, you are an adult who can simply leave. You do not have to read the air anymore to protect a child who needed protecting. You made it out. That watchful kid can finally lower their guard, take their coat off, and just be in the room like anyone else. The scanning kept you safe once. You are allowed to set it down now.
