✨ Fun Fact Friday Feature ✨

This week’s feature is: Orange County Habitat for Humanity, Gracie Terrell 👏

We love highlighting the amazing businesses AND PEOPLE that make our community so special. We are thrilled to share so that YOU get to know them a little better!

💬What inspired you to start your business (or join the company you are associated with)?
"It was pure coincidence that I had just graduated with my Bachelor’s at the same time as the Executive Director position at Habitat came open. Having worked in property management in our family business for quite some time, I thought I might be a good fit. I was up for the challenge and ready to develop my leadership skills. The issue of affordable housing was a dinner table topic in my house my entire life. It honestly seemed like the natural next step, me being involved in housing development."

💬 What’s something unique about your business that most people don’t know?
"There’s a lot of misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity- the main one being that we give away homes. In actuality, we build homes and then sell them to qualified buyers with an affordable mortgage at a 0% interest rate."

💬 What’s your best-selling or most popular product/service?
"That one is easy! Our one and only mission is to build and sell affordable homes to Orange County residents who earn between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income."

💬 What’s your favorite part about being a business owner in our community?
"My favorite part about heading up a nonprofit here is the collective goal of improving the community we call home. From other nonprofits to small businesses to individuals, everyone wants to make OC the best it can be. The collaboration and teamwork we have here is unparalleled. It’s not happening in most other counties. Even though it’s not always perfect, we’ve got a great group of people here.”

☕ What keeps you going through the day?
"32 ounces of black coffee is the bare minimum to keep this train on the rails. Don’t shame me!"

☝What’s the funniest or most memorable customer experience/moment you’ve had?
"The most memorable part of my time at Habitat so far has been building house #35. It was my first build with the organization. I got to work with my dad, grandfather and several others in the community on this project. I learned a lot and enjoyed getting to know Kayleen, the now homeowner and her family throughout the process."

🍴 What’s your go-to lunch or treat from another local business?
"It’s an ongoing joke at this point that I love Sour Gummy lotus drinks from 50 Flavs Bakery so much I never try anything else! Cheryl and her team always make sure I have plenty of gummy worms in my cup😆"

✨ What’s one thing on your bucket list — business or personal?
"My goal for Habitat is to have us consistently building two homes a year- it’s very hard for small affiliates to have two simultaneous builds for many reasons. It’s been done in the past, but it’s been challenging to get going again. I’m fixing to get us back on that track soon."

💡Advice you'd give someone that wanted to become a business owner?
"My only advice for business and for life is to act with integrity. If you do the right thing, tell the truth, be kind and mean it, even if you fail, you’ll know that you acted justly and that means more than anything else. You probably won’t fail though. In terms of nonprofits, do not let ego and emotion get in the way of your mission."

🏡 What’s your favorite thing about small-town life?
"I like the pace of it. Everything moves a little slower. To me, it feels like it’s easier to savor life that way. I lived in Indy for a little bit during college. Not knocking the city, but it was a little too fast for me."

🎉 What’s something you’re proud of accomplishing?
"I’ve got to throw it back to build #35. That was a major accomplishment and under-budget significantly. We were also one of the first affiliates in the state to raise $90,400 in tax credits with a brand new credit program from the State of Indiana last year. That is still going on and we still have credits to sell for this year, wink wink 😆"

On behalf of the Paoli Chamber of Commerce, we thank you for your dedication.
❤️

In honor of Cub Goen, friends and family chose to support OC Habitat in lieu of flowers. Over $1,400 was contributed in his memory. These tributes make an impact not only on Habitat’s mission to build safe, affordable housing, but on our family as well. We are incredibly grateful to see his memory honored in a way that not only helps our community, but also facilitates craftsmanship, something that he really loved.

Thank you to all who contributed and to everyone who continues to support our mission.

My papaw Cub was a one of a kind guy. If you had him tackle a project, whether or not it was done right wasn’t even a question that crossed your mind. If he didn’t know how to do something (unlikely), he could sure figure it out and most times it would be better than guys who had been doing it for years. In me he inspired a love of all things technological, mechanical. A lot of my time with my Papaw was spent learning how things work. He tried to tell you with words but that wasn’t his strong suit. You watched him work. Slowly and methodically. You hoped when he handed it over to you that you could make your own hands translate. When you didn’t, he would do it himself but that was just a part of his dedication to doing things right. Sometimes it was frustrating. Most of the time you felt relieved. My papaw passed down his knowledge to my uncle Doodle and to my dad- his son in law- Chris in the years they spent working together. As many of you know, me and my dad tackled a good portion of the 35th build we just finished up together. In that way, we have a tangible reminder of the things we learned from my Papaw Cub. Pride in what you do, doing things the right way, and avoiding the human inclination to take the easy way out. What you may not know, is that in November, my Papaw spent a couple weeks helping us finish out build #35. At the time, I didn’t realize it would be some of the last bonding I’d ever get with the guy. We went to Buddies gas station every day to get lunch and then we’d sit in the truck and talk about everything from taking pennies out of circulation to the decline in alcohol consumption of Gen Z. I am indescribably thankful to Habitat because without it, I may not have got the last bit of time with my Papaw that I did. That house is special for so many reasons, but this one is particularly meaningful to me. Our family has requested donations to OC Habitat in lieu of flowers. Thank you for reading and I ask that you always remember the importance organizations like this one, beyond the mission, beyond the gainful employment and beyond what you can see.
