Sarpy County CASA

Sarpy County CASA The Separate Juvenile Court of Sarpy County is currently dealing with 241 cases of child abuse and neglect. Each one is important to us. You can help.

Sarpy County CASA recruits, trains, and supports Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers who provide a voice for abused and neglected children in the foster care system, ensuring their best interests are represented in court and their needs are met. These are local families who are going through some very tough times, struggling with addictions, domestic violence and mental illness, and childr

en who are suffering at the hands of the very people they should be able to trust the most, their parents. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates – screened, trained volunteers from the community who are appointed by a Juvenile Court Judge to advocate on a one-to-one basis for a child who has been a victim of abuse or neglect. CASA Volunteers are ordinary people who do extraordinary work, spending time with children, talking to parents, monitoring services and advocating for the right of every child to a safe and permanent home, . To continue the work, the Sarpy County CASA Program needs dedicated volunteers and generous donors! Please consider helping us, so that we can advocate for every abused and neglected child in Sarpy County. Each one needs a voice in court. All of them are precious.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Julie F.🌟

This week, we’re excited to highlight one of our dedicated CASA volunteers and the heart behind why they chose to advocate for children in our community. 💙

What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?
⭐ Volunteering has always been part of my life and upbringing. My mom was a stay at home mom and volunteered for my brothers and I throughout our childhood. She also assisted with being a leader in 4-H and other activities we did. I was fortunate enough to be able to do this when my children were young and have a degree in Elementary Education, children have always had a special place in my heart and deserve caring adults in their lives. I have known friends who volunteered in the past with CASA and this was a perfect time in my life to start this adventure and give back again to children in a different way.

What’s been your favorite or most meaningful part of volunteering so far?
⭐ Just listening to the CASA children I have been working with. Sometimes I feel adults don't just sit, stop and listen to children or ask them open-ended questions to find out exactly how they are feeling. So many times we think we know the answer already to what a child will say and we stop listening, being a CASA I enjoy just sitting back and letting the CASA child tell me exactly what is going on in their life and how do they actually feel. I feel by doing this, I am giving them the space to openly share their thoughts, ideas & feelings.

What’s one thing you’ve learned or gained from this experience?
⭐ I never knew how complex the Foster Care System was and how many people/agencies are there supporting these children in need. I have been very impressed with everyone and how their goal is the well being both physically & mentally, along with safety of the children in their care they are overseeing.

What’s a fun fact about you?
⭐ For 3 years, I was an elementary school teacher (6th grade) in inner city Washington, DC Public School System.

If someone was considering volunteering as a CASA, what advice or encouragement would you give them?
⭐ Go for it - the best experience I have had in a long time - giving back to children as an adult. The amount of training did surprise me, but in the end it was exactly what I needed to get started on this journey. I look forward to working with this program for many years to come. 💙

💙 In recognition of National Child Abuse Awareness Month, we’re continuing our volunteer spotlight by highlighting one of our incredible CASA volunteers. Take a moment to learn more about their journey and the difference they’re making. ✨💙

Q) What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?
✨For most of my adult life, I have felt called to help children and teens that are victims of abuse or neglect. I don't think there was just one thing that inspired me, besides a God given desire to do something to make a difference. When I learned about CASA, it seemed like an obvious decision.

Q) What’s been your favorite or most meaningful part of volunteering so far?
✨ What has been most meaningful for me is when the children seem happy that I'm there or look forward to seeing me. Consistency and just showing up are so important to them. I also enjoy when the family members of the children, or the child themselves, tell me how thankful they are that I was there.

Q) What’s one thing you’ve learned or gained from this experience?
✨ I have learned that I can do hard things. Even though I knew that being a CASA was something I wanted to do, there are things about it that don't come easy for me. Being that I'm more of an introvert, and a peacemaker, it is challenging to put myself out there with the families and kids. As a CASA you sometimes have to ask hard questions and make hard decisions. I've learned that a child's safety and wellbeing is more important than me always being comfortable.

Q) What’s a fun fact about you?
✨ I like to play games! I enjoy trivia, board games, murder mystery and escape games. Many of my family's get togethers include some type of game with prizes. I also enjoy playing solo, like Wingspan and Final Girl. Even though I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of video games, I may or may not have a very lucrative Stardew Valley empire..IYKYK

Q) If someone was considering volunteering as a CASA, what advice or encouragement would you give them?
✨ I would say that if CASA has been on your radar and you are considering it, then there is a reason. Ask yourself what is stopping you. If it's your own fears, or insecurities, I would say you should go for it. You will have all the training you need and a great support team. We all have gifts that guide us and weaknesses that challenge us. Embrace it all and take the next step. If there is just one child that you can offer some love and security to, it will all be worth it.

👉 Ready to make a difference? 🌟 We’re now accepting applications for our daytime CASA training class- don’t miss your chance to get involved. https://sarpycasa.com/volunteer/

✨ Volunteer Spotlight ✨

We’re excited to introduce one of our amazing CASA volunteers and share a little more about their journey! 💙

What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?
🌟 My friend, Chris Lathrop and public defender and I were discussing my desire to become a lawyer. I plan to become a Guardian Ad Litem, Chris recommended the CASA route to become familiar with the juvenile court system.

What’s been your favorite or most meaningful part of volunteering so far?
🌟 I’m new, just in my first year, but the opportunities to engage with the person on my case, has been great. The support of Tara, Jenn and Alexis is motivational, and supportive. I can be confident in my ability to help.

What’s one thing you’ve learned or gained from this experience?
🌟 I consider myself a trainee, so the training and opportunities for continuing education have opened my eyes to a world I really did not have any experience with.

What’s a fun fact about you?
🌟 If I am accepted, I plan to start Law School in August, on a GAL track.

If someone was considering volunteering as a CASA, what advice or encouragement would you give them?
🌟 First, take the training, it costs nothing, but provides invaluable information. Second, talk to a CASA, to Tara, to Jenn, to Alexis, their passion is persuasive. Third, take a case, if it is not a good fit, the CASA leaders will help find a better fit for you. Our youth need advocates. If your life is good, give a little back to help make someone else’s life a little better.

✨ Volunteer Spotlight ✨
It takes a special kind of person to step up for children in foster care. Today we’re excited to introduce one of the incredible volunteers who helps make our CASA program possible.

Q: What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?
A: I’m single and found myself with some spare time now that my kiddos are grown. I wanted to find ways to help children and their families in my newfound downtime.

Q: What’s been your favorite or most meaningful part of volunteering so far?
A: Hands down, working with the kids and their families and seeing how this program can make a difference.

Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned or gained from this experience?
A: So far, a greater insight on how valuable not only your advocacy for the children is, but the time you spend with them, the smiles you give them, the times you show up or follow through with a commitment that maybe someone else hasn’t- and so much more!

Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I am a twin 😊

Q: If someone was considering volunteering as a CASA, what advice or encouragement would you give them?
A: People can be concerned they might not be able to do this because it might make them sad or they would get too upset seeing what happens, to which I say, would you feel better doing nothing at all? If I can get ONE positive outcome and still see TEN hard things I would do it. The work, the kids, the people are ALL worth it!
