**Sidewalk Repair Notice**

Tomorrow, August 27th, crews will be tearing out and replacing the curb ramps at both entrances (Lobby and Driver’s Testing Entrance). This replacement will require new concrete to be poured at both entrances and will cause the curb ramps to be inaccessible until the concrete cures.

If you require the use of a mobility device such as a walker or wheelchair and need to visit the Sheriff’s Office, please call 870-239-6343 from the parking lot and we will be happy to come out and assist getting you into the building and then back out to your vehicle.

Thank you for your patience as we improve the appearance and functionality of the curb ramps.

The storm that just went through caused damages in the areas of the following county roads: 728, 729, 765, 739. Deputies on duty report several large trees down, along with power lines. At least two motor vehicle crashes occurred during this time as well. It is unknown at this time if straight line winds or a small scale tornado is to blame.

If you are traveling in this southern area of the county, please use caution as debris could be in the roadway. If I receive further updates, I will update this post.

**Scam Alert**

An issue that is occurring with most jails across the country, and certainly here in Northeast Arkansas, continues to be a problem.

Families of detainees are being contacted by scammers that their loved one is eligible for early release provided that they wear an ankle monitor. The scammer then requests a payment over the phone or in another set form. These payments vary, and can be as much as $500 or $1,000. Once payment is made, the scammer is in the wind and folks are out a lot of money.

As a reminder, no one should EVER contact you via phone to address a loved one's bond or offer ankle monitor services. Bonds and ankle monitors are only court ordered, and no one calling you asking for money to address bonds or ankle monitors is legitimate. Detainees will be in contact with appropriate family members to arrange bond with reputable bail bonding companies. If there is ever a question about a loved one's bond or their ability to be released on an ankle monitor, please feel free to contact our booking desk at 870-239-6334, option 7, for clarification.

**Brookland Police Department K-9 Officer Necropsy Report Concluded**

An investigator with my department transported Brookland PD K-9 Officer BOLO’s body to the Arkansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Little Rock first thing this morning. Dr. Denise Apperson completed the necropsy this afternoon. The cause of death was determined to be Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, commonly referred to as “bloat”.

Deputies responded to the report of a police K-9 deceased on the morning of July 18th. Investigators noted no visible injuries to the dog’s body, and no other evidence at the scene to indicate foul play. However, due to the K-9’s position at the Brookland Police Department, a necropsy was requested to determine cause of death.

At this time, our investigation has been closed as the death was determined to be of natural causes. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brookland Police Department and the citizens of Brookland during this difficult time.

This case began in late June of 2024 when Doherty was terminated for fraudulently claiming time. Following the termination, I began the process of getting her previous job duties reassigned when I discovered a financial discrepancy in cash related to the inmate commissary account. I immediately contacted supervisors with Arkansas Legislative Audit and requested an audit, as well as 2nd Judicial District Attorney Sonia Hagood to request the Arkansas State Police’s Criminal Investigative Division to conduct the investigation. During the investigation that followed, the amount of money missing grew considerably.

This was a long and arduous investigation by ASP that required hours upon hours of gathering receipts and other financial documents, scouring financial software, and putting the case together. I very much appreciate the assistance of the auditors with Legislative Audit as well as special agents with the Arkansas State Police. The time and effort it took to get this case to where we are today does not go unnoticed.

Although an arrest has been made, the investigation is still ongoing. As ASP is the investigating agency, no further information will be released from my office.

Shelby Gray of Light operates a neat little breakfast/refreshment stand on her family’s farm. This week, she invited law enforcement to come out this morning and have coffee and donuts (aka Cop Batteries). What a hard working young lady! We enjoyed visiting her and her mom.

If you’re out west or driving out that way and need a quick breakfast, snack, or drink, stop in at 18028 Hwy 412 W (just off the 4 lane on the west end of the Light bypass) in the mornings (or for lemonade in the afternoons) from now until school starts back!

For 250 years, the United States of America has been its own country. On this day in 1776, our country officially severed our connections with British rule and established our own government via the Declaration of Independence. For the next eleven years, our founding fathers worked on the finite details of what our country and its government should look like. On September 17, 1787, those details were officially put into writing in the form of the United States Constitution.

Those two documents essentially establish that we are expected to pursue life, liberty, and happiness as well as our rights as Americans. Over the last 250 years, history has shown us and taught us that we have had great growing pains in these areas. As a nation today, these growing pains are still present.

However, with all of the growing pains still occurring nationwide and the negativity and divisiveness being perpetuated on televisions and social media, scenes like the one posted below provide us with a simple reminder: We live in the greatest country in the world and the greatest county in Arkansas. Neighbors help neighbors. Strangers help strangers. Our residents work hard to provide for their families. Our farmers endure hardships to make sure we get to eat.

Many people paid the ultimate price over the last 250 years so that we can enjoy a life today that is so often taken for granted or not appreciated as it should be. This American flag wielding combine, sitting in rural Greene County as the sun was setting, is a simple but powerful reminder of our love for God and Country. It’s also a good reminder for us to slow down and reflect on the things that really matter: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Thank you Glenn and Bufford Newberry for this fantastic display and the simple but poignant reminder of what is great about living in this country and in Greene County.

All county offices will be closing at noon tomorrow, July 2nd, and will be closed Friday July 3rd in observance of the July 4th holiday. These closures will only affect civilian employees within the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center. Patrol deputies and detention center staff will be on duty as usual.
