With summer just around the corner, we enjoyed a fun and creative visit to Memorial Elementary School for a special reading activity.

Students listened to Lola Plants a Garden and then brought the story to life by working together to “plant” their own garden—using pieces inspired by the book, 80 first graders helped create one big, beautiful classroom garden.

We also explored creativity through Eric Carle–style art while reading The Tiny Seed, using colorful tissue paper to design our own garden elements. It was a joyful morning full of imagination, learning, and hands-on fun!

We had a great day at the Ride Right Rally on May 14th at the Edgar County 4-H Fairgrounds!

A total of 70 Edgar County 6th-grade students participated in this hands-on learning experience designed to take education beyond the classroom. Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive stations covering ATV safety, lawn mower safety, rollover protection, how to put out a fire, Stop the Bleed, sun safety, and chemical look-alikes.

The day concluded with a live demonstration of an ATV accident, where our area's first responders showed students how an emergency is handled in real time. This powerful experience helped reinforce the importance of safety and the role of emergency services in our community.

This event provided students with the opportunity to engage directly with professionals, ask questions, and gain practical knowledge they can carry with them into their daily lives. Experiences like this help build awareness, confidence, and an appreciation for the use of ATVs and other power equipment that we sometimes take for granted.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our outstanding presenters and partners who made this event possible:

• Edgar County Farm Bureau and Ag in the Classroom
• Chrisman Farm Center
• Sloan Implement Co
• Edgar County Public Health Department & Dental Clinic
• Paris Fire Department
• Horizon Health EMS
• Edgar County Sheriff's Office - IL
• Paris Illinois Police Department
• Air Evac Lifeteam 145 - Mattoon, IL
• Edgar County ESDA and Jill Taylor
• Paris, Illinois FFA
• Curt Sinclair, Natural Resources and Shooting Sports 4-H Specialist

Your time, expertise, and dedication helped create a meaningful and impactful experience for our youth. We are grateful for the strong community partnerships that make programs like this possible and for your continued support in investing in the safety and education of our students. We look forward to hosting this Annual Safety Day each year to spread awareness of ATV use.
