Tara Westover had no formal schooling while living an isolated life with her survivalist family in rural Idaho. With aspirations to achieve more than the status quo, she educated herself until she found herself in a classroom for the first time at the age of seventeen.

Alejandra Campoverdi is a first-generation Latina woman who grew up disenfranchised. Despite the emotional turmoil of being what she calls a "First-and-Only", Alejandra moved up the social hierarchy to find the true meaning of belonging.

Oliver James, a functionally illiterate adult, had big dreams to learn the skill of reading and read 100 books by the end of the year. With support from strangers on the internet and some of the brightest voices in literature, Oliver went from barely being able to read a restaurant menu to closing in on his lofty goal of finishing 100 books in a year.

Each memoir in this reading list shows how education acts as a tool for self-discovery and freedom, even when it comes with a high personal cost. Each author presents powerful storytelling skills when reflecting on their non-conventional education journey. These real-life stories remind us that the pursuit of education may look different for different people and that is never too late to start learning, go back to school, or gain a new skill at any stage of life. Learning is a life-long process and what better way to learn than by picking up a book and sharing what you find with family or friends.

Today, is celebrating the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year the best way we know how. A trio of book recommendations. School is in session and the teacher is handing out frights instead of F's. The books in our list today are set on school grounds and follow characters as they experience hauntings, murder mysteries, and the dark recesses of the human soul. So, as you gear up to welcome students back to the hallowed halls of education, take a peek inside one of these thrilling novels all set on spooky school grounds. But that's not all! These books share another commonality besides an eerie atmosphere. They are all set in the Green Mountain State: Vermont! What is it about Vermont that attracts the hauntingly curious nature in us? Drop your theories and other spooky tales set in either a school setting or Vermont in the comments below!

- "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt - a classic story that redefines the murder mystery trope. On page one, we learn that the main character Richard and his band of misfit college students have murdered another student. The rest of the book goes on to explain how and why the deed was done, and what happened to the group afterwards.
- "The Broken Girls" by Simone St. James - a dual timeline haunting mystery complete with a gothic atmosphere, paranormal twists, and a decaying isolated boarding school.
- "Truly, Devious" by Maureen Johnson - book one in a six-book young adult series that weaves a delicate tale of murder and mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat.
