Pre-shot routine, Who needs one? Why? P
A pre shot routine is exactly what it sounds like, a routine a golfer has before each shot. Pre shot routines are very individualized…do I close my eyes and visualize l or do I back off 5 times and then proceed. (please don’t…for the SAKE OF PACE OF PLAY PLEASE DON’T), do I take one practice swing or 5?

Everyone who wants to play better should have a pre shot routine.
Try this. Stand directly behind the ball and your target. Picture the shot in your mind, take one practice swing then walk up, address the ball, look at your target and hit the shot. Remember the longer you stand over the ball the more your body tenses up and the worse the shot will be.
Why a pre shot routine…When we get nervous we get tense, rush things and revert to bad habits. Having a routine will help you focus on what you are trying to do instead of what you are trying not to do. This will lead to better shots and better scores.

Why do they say golf is 90% mental?

Have you ever walked off the golf course and felt mentally exhausted? Was this after a casual round with friends or after a day of League play?
Obviously this can happen after completing either of these but chances are you’re more mentally exhausted after League play. Why? Typically this is because most of us will hit our tee shot and as we walk (okay ride) to where our ball is we are thinking: did it go in the bunker, can I hit it out of the trees, am I in a divot, I hope I have a shot, what club am I going to use? All of these thoughts are using our brain and draining our focus.
The reason we are exhausted after league play or tournament play is because we try too hard and for too long on each shot.
Try socializing with your playing partners or focusing on something other than golf in between shots. Once you get to your ball you can then truly assess what is needed for your next shot and hit it.

Drill to Keep Supple and Build Core Muscles

The body turn in golf is vital. The winter months offer an ideal opportunity to build the correct golfing muscles to improve power and club head speed. The most important muscles to improve the quality of the turn are the tummy muscles or core muscles. If these are weak the turn can easily become a tilt or reverse pivot.

Stand upright with arms outstretched. Now turn back and forth making sure the head look straight forward all the time. As a golfer becomes used to this turning motion, the next step is to bend from the waist simulating the golf stance. From this position start turning back and forth for twenty turns making sure the head stays still. Even though this exercise sounds very simple it is the best way to keep the back supple while building up those vital core muscles.

There are several parts of the shoulder at risk, and the rotator cuff is the granddaddy of them all. But labral tears (torn cartilage) are becoming common and often can be traced to the backswing. When golfers keep the left arm tight to the chest as they swing back, they can tear the labrum that stabilizes the shoulder joint. This is called a posterior labral tear, and the golfer feels pain in the back of the shoulder.

A tip to help you with this. Players who don't turn well in the backswing tend to pin the left arm across the chest. Turning the upper body can be physically challenging for some golfers; others find it just plain scary, because they feel as if they won't get back to hit the ball. A good swing thought is, Turn more, swing less. When your body stops turning back, your arms should stop swinging. Think of swinging your arms with your turn, not with the muscles in your shoulders.
