As school is back in session, you’re likely seeing big, yellow school buses on your morning and afternoon commute. Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) would like to remind you about these rules of the road.

1. Never pass a stopped school bus.
2. Always stop for school buses picking up and dropping off children.

Congratulations Clint Reed for being promoted to Division Chief! Chief Reed has been with SCFD1 for 20 years, and is currently stationed in Haysville on Battalion 34.

Yesterday, crews from Stations 31, 32, 33 and Bentley Fire responded to an injury accident involving a propane truck. Upon arriving, crews found a truck carrying about 2,500 gallons of propane on its side in a ditch, leaking from the valves on the rear of the truck.

Hazmat utilized Blackline EXO 8s (area monitors) and G 8s (handheld) for air monitoring while reducing the leak. Crews also set up two electric fans to control the propane cloud, and two hand lines to protect the crew. Thanks to their quick and thoughtful response, crews were able to successfully stop the leak!

Happy National Dog Day to the SCFD1 pups! We may be a little biased, but we believe we have the best dogs. They are all highly trained with special skill sets that help us do our jobs quickly, effectively and safely.

As one of 70 accelerant detection dogs in the United States, K9 Latitude helps detect ignitable liquids in fire investigations. This helps our crews quickly and accurately determine the origin and cause of suspicious fires.

K9 Violet is a part of SCFD1’s search and rescue operations. She and her handler help responding agencies track down missing or trapped people during emergencies.

And we can’t forget our mascot, Blaze, who teaches residents about fire prevention.

SCFD1 crews were out on the lake Friday and Saturday for training on our rescue boats. This class, put on by Dive Rescue International, provided for valuable hands-on experience using and refining the Humminbird Sonar devices. These skills aid in rescue operations when victims are underwater with zero visibility.

The newest members of SCFD1 may have completed the academy, but their training doesn't end there. Now, as probationary firefighters, they'll spend their first year completing a task book to further sharpen their skills. Watch as they begin these tasks and hear from the new firefighters about life on the job so far.
