🌟 Announcing the 2026 Brad Matson Memorial Community Member of the Year Award Recipient! 🌟

Each year, this award honors someone who reflects the generosity, dedication, and quiet leadership that Brad embodied throughout his life. This year, we are proud to recognize a community member whose steady commitment has strengthened Sparks and the surrounding area in lasting ways.

We are honored to recognize Sally Stewart as the 2026 Brad Matson Memorial Community Member of the Year Award recipient! 🎉

🔹 For thirteen years, Sally led the Corn Roast concessions, coordinating food service for hundreds of attendees and recruiting countless volunteers. More than managing an event, she introduced organization and record keeping that fundamentally changed how concessions operate. By tracking what worked and planning for what was needed year to year, she created a system that made each following year smoother, more efficient, and sustainable.

🔹 She works tirelessly behind the scenes gathering raffle prizes to support the volunteer fire department and is always willing to step in wherever help is needed.

🔹 Sally participates in highway cleanup efforts and conducts monthly summer water testing on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in partnership with UW–Madison.

🔹 Following the devastating 2010 tornado, Sally created the annual Point Picnic, helping neighbors reconnect and rebuild a sense of community during a difficult time. She is often the first to welcome a new neighbor and continually strengthens the bonds that make this community so special.

Sally’s dedication, organization, and heart for this community have made a meaningful and lasting impact.

Snowshoe in beachwear with glee.

The trails await, the chili smells great,

From first snowy step to the last raffle rep,
It’s good for the heart and the soul.

At this Saturday’s 7th Annual Sherman Snowshoe Shuffle, we will once again present the Brad Matson Memorial Community Member of the Year Award.

Brad was a founding member and original President of the Town of Sherman First Responders. For 13 years he served with steady dedication, and his leadership stretched far beyond one organization. From the Iron County Board of Supervisors to state conservation boards, Brad gave his time generously and believed deeply in serving both people and place. He cared about this community the way you care for something you plan to pass on better than you found it.

After his passing in 2019, we knew we wanted his legacy to keep walking beside us. In 2023, we established this award to honor a community member who reflects the same spirit of service, commitment, and quiet strength that Brad carried into everything he did.

So yes, come for the chili. Come for the laughter. Come for the prizes and the snowy adventure. ❄️

But stay for the moment when we recognize someone who reminds us that community is not just something we attend. It is something we build, together.
